Not using those specific lights, but I'm running these LEDs. http://www.clearwaterlights.com/ Mounted low using the fork protector holes. Very happy with them... |

I saw them at Twisted Throttle's display in Daytona. I liked them alot, but they are not cheap. I have Motolights on my Harley, which weren't cheap either. I like the idea of LED lights for the low current draw and reliability. They did not have a mounting bracket for the Uly, but had some that looked like they would work. When I left Daytona and tried to look them up on the Twisted Throttle website I had a harder time figuring out which mounting options I had looked at in their booth. I think I may get the bar from Palmer and then figure out if I want these nice LEDs or some cheap halogens from Wal-Mart. |

Gamdh...is there one or two on your forks? Do they really add a lot more light? Better than say...a halogen? |

Mounting to the fork lowers goes against a low unsprung weight philosophy. It is a clean mount though. |

Extra heavy Uly wheels go against unsprung weight, and so do extra tall suspensions |

I think LED's are a nice option for bikes with a marginal electrical sys. The Uly doesn't have that problem - we've got plenty of power and HID's are a better choice for about the same $'s. LED's are trick though. Just my 2cents. |

There is on on each fork.. This is my 3rd set of lights. I had the SAENG (Halagon) and the Trail Tech HID's. I prefer these over all those. Eeach of the other sets had their issues. As for having them low.. the MSF had done studies.. the most visible light pattern is a light triangle.. thats what I wanted. Basically I was looking for 3 things: 1. mount as low as possible 2. long term reliability. 3. Min power draw (in the winter I run Gerbings heated liner and gloves and I can have both headlights on)... so the Uly power output is an issue. The Trail Tech HID's were nice.. but I had many issues with them. I keep having to send them back to Trail Tech to get fixed. I had them hanging upside down and they would fill up with water =). Also, as someone pointed out to me.. there is a 'possible' fundemental issue with the self contained lights. The ignitor and ballast and bulb are all in one small closed space. Heat build up could cause premature failures. So, I tired these. The light is as good as a halagen. Keep in mind that the light pattern on these is not a 'driving light' pattern (although I think they are working on one). The setup has a dimmer type switch so the lights intentsity is set with that (very nice actually). I run mine about 50% all the time and I can tell they are on. Mine also has a switch that when I hit my brights, the LEDS automatically go to 100% brightness. I'm wired for both headlights on for bright.. that and the LEDS do light up the road very well. |

How well do these LEDs actually light up the road? I can appreciate their usefulness in enhancing visibility to other vehicles, but I live in dear country and illuminating the road ahead of me is my primary concern. I've been considering the PIAA HIDs (similar to Trailtech), but the price has been prohibitive. Any comments? Cheers. |

I can only offer a subjective opinion on that. (Lots of Deer in N. Georgia as well). I had the MR11 HIDs from TT, one Driving and one flood/spot pattern. (these are the lower output of the 2 models from TT). I think the Clear water lights illuminate the road very well, just a well as the HIDs. I do not beleive the LEDS (with the current light pattern, they are more of a ) shine as far down the road. (again.. pretty sure the Clear water lights guys were working on a light that is designed to shine down the road). I prefer the LEDs... |

Depends on what you want... I'm very happy with what I have, they do what I want. They are very well made and I had several discussion with them (IIRC Glen), he really seems to know his lighting. These make me more visible which was my main concern and they do help light up the road. I'm sure when they release the new lights, they will do a great job for what they are intended for. Another thought... 90% of the time I'm riding in the dark... I can't use the bright lights and 100% of the LEDS .. due to other traffic. Although I don't live in a high traffic area... its rare that I have any really long strechs where I would be able to use anything more than what I have. That was another thing about the HIDS.. can't dim them, you can turn them off or on, which would not be good for them going back and forth. So, to run them all the time, I had to point them down just a little so as not to completely blind on coming traffic... which limited how much they would show down the road anyway. |

I didn't even know the Clearwater units existed and as I'm pondering what I want to add, this all feeds my desire to know more about what other's have experienced in LED vs HID vs halogen lights. We need to hear from you. No hijacking noted here! I say let it keep on going, no 'pologies! I'm enjoying this! |

I really liked the looks of the Denali's when I saw them in Daytona. One of my biggest questions, however, was how to mount them. I have my motolights on my FXDX mounted low and I like the low mounting. I like the mount for the Clearwater lights. I don't know if it would fit my XT though. I had been thinking I would just order the Palmer mount, but that won't give me the low mount. Decisions, decisions. Lots of things I want to do to my bike, but not lots of money right now. |

I dont know if they will do it again this year but clearwater was at Moto GP at Laguna Seca last year, they had the kits on show special for 399. The price on these things is ridiculous, no matter how you try and justify it. You have to convince yourself that these or motolights, or denali lights, or what ever, are worth it. Manufacturing cost on any of these sets cannot be over $100. Maybe the clearwater setup, but definitely not the denali or the motolights. Those things are simple, and mass produced. Would think in a downturn economy these companies would lower prices to lure more customers their way. I guess they can charge whatever the market will allow. The clearwater setup looks pretty good on the Uly, would be afraid to go offroad though in fear would destroy the lights though. |
