I went to go for a ride tonight, and run some errands. I turn the bike on, it does it's normal thing, tach sweep and all that. I hit the starter button and everything goes dark. I turn the key off, then back on. Nothing for a few seconds, then the IC lights up, shows Comm Error, and goes to the normal display. I hit the starter button again and it all goes dark. I rode the bike to work and back today, with no problems. Battery is brand new and showing 12.72 volts steady. Has anyone else had this problem? (Message edited by daggar on March 04, 2010) |

I would say check your battery connections - could be good enough to light up the cluster and lights but not engage the starter.... and that would also throw the comm error code if the voltage dropped low enough when you are hitting the starter button just an idea |

Battery connections are tight and fuses are good. The IC lights up, after 5-10 seconds, then goes dark when the start button is pressed. |

Sounds like low Battery to me.. Or bad wiring. |

Volts aren't everything when it comes to starting your bike. I'm no real help but this sounds like a problem for your dealer. Might as well make that warranty work for you |

Maybe you forgot to reconnect one of the ground wires at the battery? There should be 3 if you have a battery tender. Also make sure the heat shrink on the small ground wire is not covering the eyelet (ground contact area in any way) trim it back w/ a razor blade if necessary. Other than that ....see dealer |

Are you still under warranty? If so, step 1, see dealer. Try to get them to tow it for you. Alternately, if it /is/ a low battery, on a brand new battery, after riding it earlier in the day, there's a serious problem with the charging system. See dealer. If it's out of warranty... see local competent cycle shop? |

All ground wires are connected. The bike has been running fine, for a couple weeks, with the new battery. And apparently my bike has self healing properties, cause she fired right up this morning. Much weirdness. |

Check your ignition switch.Turn the fork from side to side and see if it affects it.If your cluster goes off and on it could be the switch.Mine started off doing the same thing until it would'nt start at all.On my '08 and my '09.Just something to check. Danny |

I have had to repair the wiring at the switch twice on my "R". The last time, I also removed some material from the top of the fairing stay that was interfering when at full turn left or right. Turn the bars lock-to-lock while turned on and see if the dash flickers like Thunderbike said. If I hadn't been playing with wiring and splicing for 30+ years, I would have taken her to the dealer. I had the same problem as Thunderbike. My ignition switch went out, if you turned the forks side to side it would turn on/off. Although it didn't really have anything to do with hitting the button. |

I'll definitely check the switch tonight, when I get home. Thanks for all of the responses. They are greatly appreciated. |
