The stock filter, just like the stock filter on most other vehicles is not cleanable and should be replaced. |

Put a K&N on it, besides being cleanable it's just a better filter. |

The stock filter is not designed to be serviceable. Replace with stock or aftermarket if it is dirty |

The K&N will not filter as well as the stock filter. You will get more dirt in your engine if you use a K&N. I have seen it many times on other engines. I assume it is the same on the 1125. Of course, Buell may have a bad stock filter, but I don't think so. |

Yep, nothing wrong with them. They just don't filter as well as a good paper element. BTDT |

There are many tests out there on the internet. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/airfilter/airtest3.h tm See my post about dirt getting past the stock filter seal. I believe the seal on the K&N fits the airbox tighter, but only time will tell. Maybe the K&N flows better so less larger pieces of dirt are not being sucked by the seal, only a theory. Pretty sure Buell won Daytona with a stock filter... |

giving it more air will make it more lean than it already is unless you have a tuner i dont think the ecm can give it enough more fuel to compensate for the extra air |

This is exactly why I haven't bought a K&N or started building my exhaust. I want to be able to adjust the a/f values. Apparently they're around 14:1 or something like that...I'm wanting them around 13 or possibly less. So until ECMspy Mono comes out I'm stuck. |

I was looking into the K&N for my Duramax and found this test that was performed. K&N vs stock paper filter. Its a really long article but well worth reading. I thought I would share it, very interesting. http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/kn-vs-oem-filter. html |

Chevy - Good find. I was part of a small test of flow restriction of several filters back about 1990. The information showed the "Uni-filter" better thAn what I saw back then. BUT in my own little tests over the years...the K&N is good for "race vehicles", to keep the rocks out of the intake. If you want your rings and cylinder walls to last...buy something else, (read that, OEM). I used to get shit from the dealer every year when I'd buy an OEM filter (not cleanable) for my R1 at nearly the same cost as a K&N filter (cleanable!). Funny...my R1 is still going strong at 98,6xx miles. Something must be wrong....it DOESN'T burn any oil...and gets very similar gas milage as it did when it was new. Have I used a K&N filter...yes. My ol FZR1000 with big flat slide carburetors has a pair of K&N filters. Because I couldn't figure out another...better air cleaning system. I did restrict the incoming air from below the steering stem though..hopefully to keep SOME of the dirt out. The incoming air is between the frame and fuel tank only. Tell me WHY...a purely street going (or even with a track day or two a year) motor cycle (in this case) needs to have a "filter"...that "filters" more air thAn the engine can possibly use...? Mike |
