You need to check it hot. You got plenty in there now, go for a nice long ride, check at again when you get home and put more in if necessary. |

What Froggy said. Did you change the filter? I only ask because the manual doesn't call for a filter change every time and if you didn't change the filter, then there's still some used all in there. |

Follow the procedure in the owner's manual. It is available for free online at the top of this forum. Always check the oil level when the bike is level. Do not check it when it is on the side stand. |

When you drained the oil did you remove both drain plugs? |

You must run it after the change in order to get oil back into the filter area. Then your level will lower because some of the oil will stay in the filter. As froggy said get it hot and check it. It is checked upright, but there is a procedure to doing it right |

I'm going to be changing the oil in my bike this coming weekend, first for me on this bike. The drain plugs, one is a hex head and the other side is a torx right? What size are these so I can make sure I have all the tools together before I do this? The hex head isn't an issue but my torx selection is slim and none. Get a cheapo aluminum foil deep pan. The one like what food delivery places use when they cater out(bigger is better). Put the kickstand down in it. You will make a mess. |

Follow this link: Owners Manual Everything you need to know is in there. However, I'll reiterate a couple of points: 1. There are 2, yes 2, drain plugs. you must empty the oil from both or you will only have done a partial oil change. 2. You must ride the bike for at least 5 minutes (actually riding not idling) and then let it sit for at least 4 minutes before checking the oil level. 3. The bike must be upright when checking the oil. I learned to use a level after a couple of frustrating attempts. (Message edited by RatsMC on March 01, 2010) |

It is a 6mm hex head or allen wrench, not a torx head. |

Question for you guys. I had the 600 mile check up. Brought the bike home, and checked the oil, and nothing on the stick. I did the check both hot and cold. Trailered back to the dealer. They said that you can only check it hot, and that there was plenty of oil in it. They said that there are a lot of places for the oil to hide. Got it back today. Drove a couple of miles for coffee, and then a couple of miles back. Got home, had my son hold the bike upright, and barely oil on the tip of the stick, screwed in? Normal? How do you ever check the oil, if it never goes up on the stick? Second question. I had the bad stator replaced. Tonight, I go out to leave and the low beam is gone, only a small kind of running light was on....I had to ride with the high beam. 700 miles, what do you think? Changing out the stator burned out the light? The dealer shorted the light? Just wondering if anyone else had this problem. |

The oil on the dip stick concern I have delt with. I did the same thing, went to the dealer etc. checked and checked. continued to look for leaks etc. 6K later, still no problems (knock on wood). |

The oil check is VERY picky and the instructions have to be followed exactly. Ride the bike 10+ miles. Stop on a level spot and idle for 3 minutes, holding the bike upright thru the whole process. edit>turn off the ignition. While continuing to hold the bike straight up, wait 3 minutes. Now, check the oil. When I do this, it is completely repeatable and 3 qts shows at the top of the operating level. Zack (Message edited by zac4mac on March 06, 2010) |

As a CR owner w/350mi here is how I checked the oil. After a ride I just stayed on the bike and waited 3 minutes. I bent over while keeping bike upright unscrewed and pulled the dipstick. After wiping it off and putting it back on all the way I pulled it out and it was right on the full mark. worst part was sitting there. one of the guys at the shop walked over and asked if everything was OK? just sitting there looking stupid I guess. |

To be honest, I just dump the 3 quarts in and then forget about it. As for the headlight bulb, shit happens. Could it be related to your stator failure? Yes. Either way, its just a bulb, I'd just swap it, and if it happens again then I would address it with the dealer. |

This all seems way over complicated to just check the oil level (I know you guys are just following the book). Why o why don't they graduate the dipstick so you can check the level with the bike on the side stand instead of trying to balance the bike upright whilst unscrewing the dipstick. I thought EB thought outside the box and had this all sorted on the XB range. So what happened - did he forget to tell Rotax this little nugget when he told them to design this engine to his spec. } |

I have yet to see much oil at all following this procedure. the shop says it is full. got the recall on the wiring harness and the electrical done. replaced a headlight that blew. Looks like everything is okay now.... Sure would like to check the oil easy.... I hear that there is a site glass on the 2010 models. wonder if that is able to retrofit? |
