Shawn is riding a Ducati in A S B at Daytona. I thought we were donating so he could ride a Buell in A S B. Did I misunderstand something? I'm glad to help his DSB effort, but I did want to see him on a Buell. |

A Buell 1125R is uncompetetive in Superbike ,but I'm sure Shawn would have raced a 40K Buell 1125RR instead of a 40K Ducati 1098R ,if Eric Buell would have offered to let him race one . |

Shawn is racing the Buell 1125R in the 200 Miler - the Daytona Sportbike class Shawn is racing the Moto Forza Ducati in American Superbike class. The abbreviation A S B gets hit by Badweb software and changes to Al Lighton's company name. Shawn cannot afford to run the 1125R all season in Superbike since the contingency money is just not there. He cannot afford to build a second 1125R (or obtain an RR) to compete in Superbike. The hope is that he can get the Buell onto the Daytona podium. Running it the rest of the season would put him almost $50K out of pocket for direct expenses (or more) If Homecoming had been on the AMA weekend in April, he'd have run the Buell at Road America - but the AMA Road America races will be over 2 weeks before Homecoming. |

I'll preface this story with this; I used this decal/graphics place last year to make my numbers for my race bike. I returned to the same place last week and gave them my new front plate and the old rear plate so they could get the numbers ready for me.... So I go to the decal place to pick up my plate and have them affix the numbers to my new rear plate that I had painted. I hand the "charming, young" lady my rear plate and she's like "ok". So I ask her how long is it going to be. She goes in the back and returns with "later this afternoon" (keep in mind I am doing last minute race prep and I had a work function thrust upon me at the last minute for today). So I say, just give me the numbers, I'll put them on myself. She tells me they have not even made the numbers yet! So I say about what time, cause I really need this done. The lady goes in the back and I can hear the shop owner yelling "Tell him later this afternoon". She comes back with my front plate and the old rear plate and much to my dismay I see there aren't even numbers on the front plate!!!! I question this and she replies they will only do them all at once and it will be later this afternoon or you can go elsewhere. I gather my stuff (refraing from making an az of myself) and leave. One phone call later and I am directed to a shop on the other side of town who can do the exact same numbers while I wait. So I drop the plates and go do another errand. When I get back the plates are done and he charges me $10. You can quess where I WON'T be going anymore... I ran some errands, reported to work for 3 hours, came home and got the bike mostly ready. All I need to do now is change the oil! |

Sat: Awoke to the cold and spinkles. Track was mainly dry for practice on my XB and slightly damp on Tim's 1125r. About 30 minutes prior to race time it began a steady rain in the 45 degree weather... Tim put some rains on his bike and I got to start. I was forced to pit early due to the bike wandering ALL over the place and a foggy visor. We found the tire pressure was too low (Bummer!). We all took turns putting laps down (Tim, Tom & I), but I was not prepared for the conditions and continued to have issues with my visor fogging... Despite my holding the team back, we managed to finish 12 overall. The rain let up just as the race was ending (go figure)! Sun; Practice felt good and I was getting more comfortable with the track. For my first expert race, I started on the front row and ended up 4th or 5th going into T-1. Got through the infield and lost a few more spots. I thought I was the last expert rider until another Buell passed me. At first, I thought to myself "where the heck did he come from??" LOL ... Then I thought "Oh no you don't". We battled back and forth for the last 3 laps. In the end, I was able to hold him off (with much higher corner speeds) for a sixth place finish! Done!! I completed my first expert race and I can say "I raced at Daytona"!!!! NO crashes... though I did run off once in the cicane during practice and nearly ran off on the cool down lap in the International horseshoe. Refelctions: Daytona was fun/scary/awesome!!! Running 130ish 10 feet from the wall is just insane!! I don't see how the faster guys do it! Running on the banking was weird. You had to look up to see through the turn and steer into the turn as oppossed to the normal counter steer. When ever I was near anyone going into the flat corners, I found I could out-brake nearly all of them or at least hang with them through the corner. While on the banking, I found lots of time to "think" and at one point yelled in my helmet "I am racing at Daytona!" I find I still need to work on getting on the gas earlier out of the corners (something that held me back a bit last season). It is much easier said then done!! Overall I had a blast!! I learned a lot and built back some confidence that had been lost after the WERA GNF last year. My fastest lap was a 2:17. I hope to make some more races this year. See (some of) you bisches on Friday!! (Message edited by Paint_shaker on February 28, 2010) |

had a good time at Daytona so far. Team Challenge with Laird Canfield and Tom Bumpus with conditions such that finishing was the accomplishment!! came in 2nd in amateur GTO on race DOT's when i should have stuck with the rains. got good starts in the heavyweight races only to blow it in the backstretch chicane. managed to figure most of it all out for the Supertwins race and took another second. big thanks to Pat on his suggestions and Bob Sweeney for straightening out my electronics. AHRMA for the next 2 days and then hanging for the AMA. GO BUELL RACING!!!!! tim |
