I am planning on purchasing a small computer to take along with me when I travel to use for internet access and GPS maps. Will one of these 10 inch Acer or the like "NetBook" computers also work for adjusting the ECM on our Buell bikes? | ||

If you have a USB cable rather than a serial one (or the USB/RS232 converor and serial cable) and it's running an OS that allows you to run the appropriate software then in theory you'd be good to go. I just bought my wife a MSI mini-laptop (in pink LOL) that seems to have eveything in it you could want and it runs XP so it's simple to use too (Message edited by Jules on February 26, 2010) | ||

In a thread over at BuelletinBoard one of the testers of MONO said that they specifically tested it on a couple of different netbooks and it ran fine. Which was good news to me cause that's what I was hoping to do!! | ||

We own an Acer - but don't consider it a very rugged netbook. Get good service but if you're considering using it around a running motor with the smoke, dirty hands, heat and vibration - it's going to be pretty vulnerable. Otherwise, we use the HECK out of our little Acer. It travels well. Battery life is good. Wireless antenna seems to pick up well. | ||

Use a Keyspan USB to serial unit...they are the only units that operate at a baud rate that my Excelsior Henerson uses (an a bunch of others too). | ||

Get a solid state drive if you can. I used an Asus to datalog on my xb9 and I would get an occasional corrupt log, probably from the hard drive skipping. The computer still runs great though.   | ||

The operating system that the NetBook I was looking at was the new light windows system. I would perfer XP but I have not been able to find one yet. Has anyone loaded the ECM software on one of the NetBook with the New Windows Light? | ||

The mini laptops are great little machines. I'm posting this from an MSI wind that I've converted into a Macintosh. The Wind and the EEE PC are easy to upgrade the memory in. Things like the newer Dell Minis and the Aspire One, not so much. Pick a machine that you can upgrade to 2 gigabytes as 1 is not enough in today's environment. The Samsung and Toshiba netbooks have the best build quality. | ||

Using an Asus eee 1000he seems to have work well for everything- installed Ubuntu netbook remix as well. Notably better performance with Ubuntu than with XP although I haven't run tests to quantify the difference- more of a seat of the pants feeling. I suspect if I upgrade the memory I will get even better performance. I highly recommend the ASUS- seems to have a very good build quality and the machine has worked reliably for the past 8 months that I have had it. | ||
