I have been getting some seeping from my clutch cover gasket, so I went and picked up one from a local dealer. I said "I need a clutch cover gasket for an 03 XB9R." He gave me something that had the right shape, but was not what I remembered seeing haven replaced my primary fluid the year before. I asked if he was certain this was what I needed, and he said yes, so I left.

I went to change the primary fluid before I put the bike away for the winter, and I find that my memory was indeed correct. Here are pictures with the old gasket on the left, and the new gasket on the right.

Here's the picture from the Parts book:

The problem I have is that the new gasket is 100% not compatible with my clutch cover. Do I have some special and rare clutch cover? I see that this is the clutch cover gasket available at American Sport Bike, but it is not the part number listed in the 03 XB9R parts book. Am I missing something, or do I just need to convince my dealer (and Al) that their parts reference is wrong?

Your "New" gasket is the one I have been using on 2 XB's and a Blast for a few years now. They probably revised the part.

But it literally WILL NOT work. The bolt holes are the wrong size, the gasket does not make a complete seal because of the cavities in the cover. Do you really think the two are compatible? I just would hate to fire the bike up and spew oil everywhere because of a cheap incorrect gasket.

I was making up a guide last time I changed the fluid, and I took this pic of my new gaskets

I don't know why you are having issues with yours, it should fit.

40k miles on my XB, no leaks.

Sorry if I don't believe you froggy, but all of your bikes are much newer than mine. I'm wondering if the clutch cover changed to allow the use of the different gasket?

Ok, I did some digging. Your old gasket is 25351-00Y. This part is what came with your bike. Starting on the 2004 bikes, they changed to the new gasket and new clutch cover. You can't get the old gasket anymore as far as I know. If you can't get the new gasket to work and and you can't find another old one, you can buy the new style clutch cover for $19.75 and it comes with the new gasket. I would hit up the classifieds on here, might be able to get the newer cover cheap. Personally thats the way I would go, as its not going to get easier to find parts in the future.

I never noticed it before, because on my 03 Blast, the previous owner must of switched to the newer cover so I used my new gaskets with that.

Sorry for the bad news, but at least we know your not going crazy : )

Wow, thanks for digging that up for me. I guess I have to get a new clutch cover then. I'll see if I can find a used one. A new one would look out of place on my "used" looking bolt.
