I installed mine today and everything went pretty straight forward but after taking it out for a quick spin I noticed I was leaking oil out of the stator cover. At first I was afraid I over torqued the bolts but I used my torque wrench so it had to be something else. After taking a look at it and removing the carbon cover it looked like it was leaking out by the gasket. I looked at the cover a little closer and saw that there were parts of the carbon cover that were a little too over molded and they were hanging up on the 2 oil line connectors that are close to the stator cover. I used my dremel and cut them down a little to make sure that all the torque on the screws is going to the carbon cover to the stator cover to the case. I started it up and let it idle a little and it looked like there was more oil coming out between the stator cover and the case but I couldn't tell if it was what was already there or not. I'd like to take it out for another ride but that won't be for another month at the earliest. Has anyone else had this issue with these covers? If so what did you do to fix it. I used my torque wrench so I know the torque is right but if its still leaking I don't know what to do. I'd hate to not be able to use this expensive cover. What do you guys think? |

Just to cover the bases, have you calibrated your torque wrench lately? |

Did the covers come with instructions with new torque ratings? I only ask as wouldn't the carbon "give" a little when tightening the bolts up so your tourque settings would need to be adjusted to compensate.. TBH though I'd have expected it to mean you'd overtighten rather than undertighten IYSWIM |

When I put mine on...I used my calibrated fingers for tightening the fasteners. After the first three heat cycles and retightenings, no more leaks. Mike P.S. - For what it may be worth, I found some paint to seal the surfaces that is very close to the C.F. color. The trimmed edges will soak up water and oil and eventually start to fail. Might be a good idea to think about this if you are driving on the street (rain, water, road grime, oil, grease...etc.). (Message edited by 1_mike on February 22, 2010) |

I'll post some pics in a little bit. I got them from http://www.racetaylormade.com/ You need to call them to order because they don't list them on their site. They are $300 for both. I have not calibrated my torque wrench (maybe you can explain what I need to do this) but because I have a feeling it needs to be calibrated I tested the bolts before I took them out so I knew what to set my wrench to, even tho the reading on the wrench was off. The covers did not come with any directions so I went by the manual torque spec of 97 in/lbs or 8 ft/lbs. On the clutch cover (which I'm not having a leak from) as I was tightening down the bolts the carbon was making some squeaking noises as I was approaching the max tightness but they didn't crack, it was just the screw tightly rubbing the carbon. I assumed I over tightened them but I used the torque wrench and later found that the edges were getting hanged up on the oil pipe connectors. Once I trimmed the excess on the cover it went on better but I can't tell if it will hold or not. I need to take it out for a couple more rides before I know if I fixed it or not. Mike, what kind of paint did you use and where did you get it from? I was a little surprised that the covers weren't covered in a clear coat like most carbon exhaust cans. I did notice that all the bolts holding on both covers came loose after a couple mile ride so I removed them all and put them back with loctite. Hopefully that'll fix the bolts coming loose and hopefully since there is no excess on the left cover all the torque is applied directly to the cover. I wish it was warmer out so I could see if it's fixed or not. |

blur, i had the same issue with taylormade covers on my cr. installed them a couple weeks ago but could not ride until this past sat. due to snow. this was also the my first ride since the inital service and oil change, so i took it through the gears and shifted at 9500(this thing is too fast and i'm too old). stopped for lunch and noticed oil on my left boot so i called my mech at the dealer and he thought that it may be the filter. he offered to come and pick me up(50 miles...HRHD rocks!!) but the oil level was good so i tightened the filter and limped to HRHD. he cleaned the oil from the bike and determined the leak was from the cover. although i had torqued it to spec, the cover had some give(kelvar) and it wasn't tight enough. the mech(junior) also used the finger cal. method and tightened them quite a bit. he suggested that i check them once in a while. no more leaks and these covers are the bomb! terry |

Thanks Terry. I can only keep an eye on it and hope they don't leak anymore. Here are the pics I promised. The oil was leaking out from the green gasket.

^Thanks. Here is another one just because I haven't been able to show it off since I got it... too cold haha. I just got some Uly pucks today that I need to put on along with a slip on and some traction grips. This warm weather can't come fast enough.
