I'm taking a 5,000 trip. A belt cost $175. Should I buy one?

I would. It's not that your belt is likely to fail, it's that you'll be stuck for several days waiting on a replacement if it does.

Buy a new belt and install it before you leave home. Keep the old one for a spare. The pre-stretched spare will be much easier to install roadside if you have to swap it.

Buy one and keep it at home. Most likely, you wont need it, but keep it in a place where someone can access it and overnight it to you just in case you do need it.

+1. A used belt coils up nice and easy, stuff it in the bottom of a tank bag or something.

Here is what I have for long distances, thats a clutch cable wrapped around the outside.
It fits in a back pack.
+ 1 one the used belt, I would not like to fit a new belt on the side of the road, the belt in the picture is a used belt.

I haven't broken a clutch cable in years. Many years. I lube them when I change the oil, and replace them every two years now. It's overkill in some peoples eyes, but it works fine for me.

Almost never if you keep it properly lubricated and you don't dump the bike on that side. Again though, if you DO break it, you may be waiting a long time on a replacement.

I broke mine at around 40k. I had plenty of warning and was able to get my replacement ordered before it broke, then it finally broke the day before it came in.

My clutch cable broke at the stop sign at the end of my street. Although it was 4:30 AM and I was on my way to work, the short 1/3 mile push back to the house seemed rather easy when contemplating trying to get someone to help me on the toll road miles from home.

A spare is a plus for sure on both the belt and clutch cable.
