I just bought one of those "universal" LED gear indicator. It has 6 color coded wires that go to a plug (which I'm sure will have to be cut off) and one black wire by itself. Has anyone installed one of these on an '08 R or have a wiring schematic that might show what wires I need to splice into? Thanks in advance for any help. |

What do each of those 6 wires do? Perhaps we can reverse engineer a way to splice it in. |

Who knows? I made a mistake and opted for a cheapy on eBay and it came with no instructions. I assume one should go to the speed sensor, one to the tach, probably and power and a ground. Not sure about the others though or which wire does what. Was hoping maybe someone else had tried a similar one. |

I have a Veypor VR2 race computer, it works by using a tach signal for RPM reading, power, and a magnetic sensor mounted to the wheel. You then program your gear ratios in. I have no idea how your unit would install and function. |

I think you'll really struggle without any instructions, I think I'd send it back. It's a shame you don't have an excuse to upgrade to an 09 IC, that has the gear indicator already.. Do you know what brand of gear indicator you have? Maybe there are some instructions online? |

This is a simple simple circuit here...relax.. Without seeing the product I will make a "best guess assumption". In the mean time please post a picture if possible The led circuit is simple, 6 lamps I take it?? 6 wires in a connector and a single black ground wire. This will be easy to confirm since a diode requires current flow from positive to negative. First take a 9v battery and hook up the b+ side to one of the terminals in the connector, then hook up b- to the black wire, if an led lights up you've got the polarity correct, if it doesn't reverse the polarity and re-test. Once you have established the correct polarity you can now identify and label your led's for gear positions. The next part may be simple ,tricky, or not possible. I don't have a wiring diagram for an 09 1125 just the 08 which doesn't show anything except the neutral switch in the circuit, so someone else is going to have to help out here and supply a circuit reference for the gearshift position switch (if it has one...I assuming it does) You can get started on the led part and we'll wait for some help and then we get this whole thing sorted out for you... Cheers Mike G |

I just realized that you might have an alpha numeric led indicator?? please specify brand and link to product. i'll help if i can... |

You might need some kind of control module to make that work.(might not be worth the trouble) I think the one wire will be either power or ground, the others will complete a circuit and make one line on on the diplay. you could try it out with the 9v battery test... Quote from jules: "It's a shame you don't have an excuse to upgrade to an 09 IC, that has the gear indicator already.." @Sportbikermed Didn't you say that your speedometer drops out to zero intermittanly??? Cheers Mike |

Yea I think I have seen it do that a few times Mike. And it does occasionally get a slight bit of moisture in the IC which like I saw another member say could be a safety hazard not being able to see the gauges. That could work. Okay so to anyone who has upgraded to the '09 IC, do you lose your odometer readings? |

I have not been able to get an upgraded cluster.... yet the odometer info is stored in the ecm |

the odometer info is stored in the ecm I don't think that it's JUST stored in the ECU (not that you said it was) otherwise when you fit a race ECU your miles would zero.. I did read (on here) that it's stored in both the ECU and the IC so it's possible that a new IC wouldn't necessarily reset the miles... Someone else will know for sure though as others have replaced theirs..} |

Jules, I believe your right or the race ecm's would have to be programed with your mileage. one must feed the info to the other whichever one is replaced |

I,m having mine replaced in two weeks time. they asked me for the mileage when they ordered it and said they needed it because they have to program it into the cluster at the factory. If you still need to now about the gear indicator in two weeks i'll let you now then. however I remember reading on here that it does work on a 08 when fitting a 09 cluster. |

Banana let me know how that works. I would love to have it built in so it doesn't look like an after thought. Are you getting yours through warranty or did you purchase it straight out? What is the price to purchase straight out? |

having it done under warranty. The cluster got some water ingress and effected the lcd display. As such i do not now how much it would cost to buy outright. I also live in the uk so it would be in pounds.I'll post up when I get it back in a fortnight. :-) |

Both the cluster and the ECM store the mileage. Once a cluster is married to an ECM it stores the bike's VIN and mileage and cannot be changed. What this means is if you swap ECMs, your cluster will push the bike's mileage to the ECM. If you swap clusters, a new cluster will have a 30 min synchronization session with the bike's ECM and then copy the VIN and mileage. If the cluster has already been synced and is swapped onto another bike, it will push its mileage to that bike's ECM. As far as how the gear indicator works for new clusters, the gear calculation is all done by the ECM and sent to the cluster via the CAN network. That is why a new cluster with gear indication works on an older bike, it is just a simple calculation based off your speed and RPM and is matched to a gear map that's built into the ECM's programming. The original 08 clusters will never built to utilize the gear indication message being sent to it from the ECM. It has always been there, but isn't used until a newer cluster with the proper programming that can read it is put on the bike. Banana, your dealer probably either doesn't know what they are talking about or is confused since the your bike will automatically sync your bike's mileage. There is no need to have a cluster sent in with the mileage already inside. They might be thinking about the XBs since they have a "dumb" cluster that doesn't talk to the ECM and must be preprogrammed with the mileage if replaced. |

I use Manchester HD. they have been very good to me since i have been using them. especially as i didn't buy the bike from them in the first place. |

So took my bike into manchester buell on saturday. took it up on a trailer cos I needed to show them a problem with the bike that only shows its self the first time you start it up after a prelonged time without been started. guess what started it up and the bloody thing didn't play up. the guy's said they would look at it anyway while they where changing the instrument cluster. They came back to me after testing my bike against another 1125R turns out my throttle position sensor is only putting out 68% output that it should be. So they are going to change it under warranty. however the outcome has meant that the bike has had to stay at the dealers so I couoldn't check the gear indicator display. Just as soon as I get it back I will post up regarding the gear indicator. by the way I can't praise manchester buell enough for there efforts and service they have shown me over the past 12 months. I will definatly be taking by bike back to them. they are 80 miles away from me but it is worth it to now that the people are interested in giving there customers a very good service. |
