Finally got around to checking the primary chain tension on my 00 X1 today, not happy with what i found. Checked when the bike was dead cold. The tight spot was 6mm (bout 1/4 inch) loosest was just over 15mm (bout 1 1/8ish inch's). I loosened it off a fraction took the tight spot up to about 8mm, now the loose spot is scary loose. It also makes a bit of ticking noise which was never there before....think its to loose. What would you recommend running a bit tighter or leave it loose?. I know it needs replacing but that won't happen for a while due to money probs, specially when ya break the shift lever putting it back on..Bloody $100nz for a new one. |

Umm, not sure if its been done?. The primarys been opened up before, but don't know what for or when?. How would i tell if its been replaced with the updated version if and when i open it up?. I tightened it up a tad today, ticking noise is gone and its back to finding Neutral easy. |

the updated shoe has a thicker mounting plate than the old one, about 1/4" thick. The old plate is thinner and tends to fracture. I would say its worth checking before shit happens. |

There can't be 3/4" between tight and loose. Something is wrong. |

A CHAIN or DRIVE BELT is adjusted on the tight spot ... If one can not find the tight spot, you will not be able to adjust correctly !!! |

How would i tell if its been replaced with the updated version if and when i open it up?. Bikes made after 6/00 should have the updated tensioner. Prior to 6/00 it would be thinner, or it would depend on running the VIN at Harley to see if it was warranteed, probably not tho. That is for the M2, not sure about the X1, I might be off by a month or 2. Here is a crappy pic where you can see.
The old tensioner is around 1/8" thick, the new one is around 3/16... or so. There is always stretch variance between points on chains, but yours sounds kind of extreme & maybe you should pull the cover and see what is going on. |

BUELLers: This old supposedly weak part was used in EVO SPORTSTERs from 1990 ... It did not show up as a weak part until the BUELL engines got more Horse Power with more aggressive riders ... With more Horse Power and aggressive riders the engine would expand more laterally(Horse Power makes HEAT) and the 1990 chain tension mentality, the chains are being adjusted(and still are) too tight ... So rather than up date the chain adjusting mentality, just make a stronger part an go on ... Want proof that you or who ever is adjusting your primary chain too tight, well just look at plastic on the chain adjuster ... If the plastic is deeply grove'd it should be very obvious to the most casual observer that the primary chain is being adjusted TOO TIGHT ... "MAY THE LONG LASTING BUELL BE WITH YOU" !!! |

BUELLers: Incorrectly or improperly adjusting the primary chain dramamatilly shortens the life of the said chain !!! (Message edited by buellistic on February 11, 2010) |

Quote: “Incorrectly or improperly adjusting the primary chain dramamatilly shortens the the life of the said chain !!!” Do you realize even thought this is a correct statement you used “the” in a four word to one ratio; also that that version of “drama” is the daytime soap version! Quote: “With more Horse Power and aggressive riders the engine would expand more laterally(Horse Power makes HEAT) and the 1990 chain tension mentality” HOWEVER, the lateral expansion of an engine regardless of the operator and their aggressiveness, escapes me, especially with the referance to heat (in this case) and the relationship to the “mentality” of the primary chain. Don’t make me right another chapter of Jerry Wrigger….I just do not have the time!!! |

The lateral expansion however creates more surface area which, in concert with the speed associated with the power that generated the heat offsets the expansion. . . . . Me thinks you think too much. |

Court - you might be referring to vertical squish that “blows head gaskets" as opposed to horizontal expansion that jazzes primary chains…No need to respond I am the straight man here and take the full brunt of my drivel!!! (Message edited by Rickie_d on February 10, 2010) |

Kev - Maybe just one, with someone in that is on the fence between level 2 & 3 on Vaillant’s defense mechanism continuum. You know I do not like so many railings around my table when I am having a beer. Victims…of their own doing bring me down; remember when you almost got your ass kicked for just knowing me! J – Yup, we quartered a 88 and had a 2stroke 3cylinder water cooled Suzuki water buffalo laying around – seemed like a match made in heaven after a few Honey Weis’s. So out pop the chalk line and a legless lawn chair and another twisted idea takes on a life of its own. (Message edited by Rickie_d on February 12, 2010) |

Rickie, While being threatened because you can dance, and he couldn't, was interesting, the next day was even more fun. Which one of you F'in morons let's that suicidal maniac ride your bike? Ah, that'd be me officer. But he know the rules, if you break it you gotta fix it. Fun conversation! But we got away with it. He only followed us to the county line. |

I don’t know what that sheriff was thinking when stating he was going to ticket me for excessive lean angle! Shit, that is no indication of speed; I fall over when I’m stopped! So do you for that matter! I really think I just scared the crap out of him in that I might have scratched his front fender with my helmet. I remember him mumbling about the paperwork and putting me under protective custody. OK, one extreme to another – There was a fitting of a future pilot to the Beefalo.

Oh….and in my defence…if Barney Fife had not been running on the centerline in a blind corner, I would not have had to lift my head to miss his headlight. |
