Had a slow start getting any riding time in with a couple of business trips and rainy SoCal weather lately, but should be ready for 1000 mile service in a few weeks. I'm stopping by the dealer Monday to get/order the appropriate parts to ensure I have them on time. So far, it looks like I need the following:

Oil Filter - 63806-00Y
Primary Insp Cover Gasket - 34819-03A
Clutch Cover Gasket - 25377-03A
O-ring Oil Drain Plug/Primary Drain Plug - 11105
3 Qts Oil
1 Qt Tranny

I realize I may not need the drain plug o-ring but figured I might as well have one on hand. Did I miss anything?

Also, most bikes have a fastener check at the first service, so was surprised I didn't see that for the 1000 mile checks. However, I don't see any listing in the service manual for "critical fasteners"... am I missing it or is there no such list? I'm assuming all the standard culprits - caliper mounts, handlebar bolts, axles, pinch bolts, exhaust mounts, foot pegs, etc.?

PS I've seen the scoop on the oil drain plug torque (12-15 ft-lbs?); is there a similar problem with the transmission drain torque?

The gaskets may be ok also. I did 10k service on mine and used the gaskets again. They were like new. I went over the whole bike as far as visible fasteners. I dont have a critical fasteners section in my service manual. If you do find loose bolts or screws, blue loctite is your friend!!! My chin fairing screws were loose, and 1 gone. Got a new screw, put loctite on em all, and they are still there, still tight. Just follow the list in the manual, and you will be fine.

why would you need new gaskets after only 1000 worth of riding on the clock?

Gaskets are intended on being 1 time use. If you reuse it, you risk having it leak. I have reused my gaskets a bunch of times and have been fine, but I do have spares on the shelf should it happen.

Firebolt, I'm with you my friend. I reuse the head gaskets on my BMW all the time too (but they are muy beefy). But since the manual says "once" I figured I would keep a set of gaskets on the shelf. On the other hand, the cost of a few gaskets every 5K is pretty small. Spend a couple hundred dollars on one aftermarket accessory and you've probably spent the average rider's lifetime service expense for gaskets.

"Critical fasteners" should be checked regularly. Not just at service intervals. They are critical after all. It only takes a few minutes of your time before a ride, and it could save your life.

Critical fasteners are the ones that seem to fall out 300 miles away from home. I am yet to find a list so I can figure out which one is going to come off next.

Froggy, Uly - Agree. I'll come up with a list based on my previous bikes and use that as a guideline - and then start adding in the things (like Froggy mentions) that add themselves as time goes on.

The temperature in San Diego plummeted to below 50 last night and it rained the other day. We're suffering here.

I can usually reuse the primary and clutch gaskets three times before they leak. I keep a pair on hand just in case.

We had 0 degrees last night, and got almost a foot of snow in the last few days. Suffering? I would be riding in that 50 degree stuff. Suffering is looking at your bike and not being able to tell er yur going to ride er hard. .................................................. .....oooooohhhhhh the humanity......................................
