Has anyone made a trip to the top of Pikes Peak on a Buell that is fuel injected? Any issues on the way up or down? Thinking of a trip in the future. My only problem is that I have a 12 hour ride with no curves to get there.

I remember reading a couple Buells were in a Pikes Peak race a few years back. One was an STT, dont remember the other one. They came in second and third behind a Ducati

It should be fine if you cruise it once and awhile to let it set the AFV. Under 4000 RPM at partial throttle.

You will be fine. Badweb sponsor High Country has a few Buell race bikes they use for the pikes peak race.

Yeap, no problem. Jim Naince, myself and Lynn all rode up on FI bikes. I have done it on a carb bike as well.

I have not make the trip to the top of Pikes Peak. I have been to the top of Mount Evans on a fuel injected Buell. Last year on a 2009 XB. Absolutely no issues. I was not racing or pretending to race, just a slow cruise to the top. Stayed up there as long as I could stand it, (windy and cold).

Can't say I've done Pike's Peak, but Evans is pretty darn high. Here's our local club ride.
In case you can't tell, it's an S1, an X1, then an XB. I hauled booty up there to set up to get the shot. No issues whatsoever w/ any of the bikes. Go for it.

I'm stationed in Colorado Springs. I've taken my 05 XB9SX to the top of Pikes Peak. No issues whatso ever. The FI handles it just fine.

My brakes were warm when they did the temp check on the way down, but no other problems.

That's why you downshift and use a lower gear. Let the engine brake for you. Mine were stone cold when I got to the check point.

Engine braking wastes gas and can cause high oil consumption. If the hills are steep enough you could just coast down in neutral with the engine off.

I was not aware they were checking brakes on motorcycles anymore. They waved me right through last time. Normally I would agree with using neutral but since a good portion of the road is unpaved it is best to stay in gear and off the front brake. Once you get close to the entrance you should not need to do either. Just ride normal.

No problem. Did it last February when the temperature at the top was 13F. Caution, don't let the bike cool down much if it is that cold at the top as it was a bear trying to get it started. Use engine braking on the way down and check your oil when you get home.

Pikes Peak. : ) You'll have a good time.

It does whack the FI out, but it will relearn once you ride around at a constant altitude for a little while. When you're coming down, you'll notice the strange throttle response, but the bike certainly works. It's just a little "off."
