The cam cover will wiggle off gradually without pulling the rocker box covers, but it won't go back on that way, so you might as well pull them first. If you drop the oil pump (no other dissassembly required, 15 minute job), you can look up in there with a flashlight and a dental mirror and see the oil pump drive gear. Bet it has no teeth left, if the gear is even still on there. Check the oil pump as well, I would also not be suprised if it was broken up. I have pictures over in the knowledge vault. You will also need an oil pump gasket. Hope we are all wrong (me especially) and it is something simple. I never dismantled the deutsch connector on the cam position sensor, I just bungied the cover to the frame of the bike and left it there with the wire connected while I did the rest of the work. Dropping the oil pump is a pretty easy job, less then an hour to have it out and back in, and $1 for a gasket. I think everyone with 15k or more miles should do it at their next oil change and visually inspect the drive gear for wear.

Snail, I've noticed it takes more dialog to fix a problem than praise the machine. Buell owners tend to take the things apart without needing to far more often than other sport bike owners. They are sooo easy to work on, being insanely high performance mutants of 45 year old technology. |

Mr. TBolt: The 110/70ZR was not original fitment for a Hurricane. No radial was. That may be his problem. Mr. CC: My Buell did the same thing when the cams froze and snapped. It's not gonna do your motor good to spin it, if they did, or even the pinion gear. |

Asquire, I have worked on them, own one. The electronic part is real fun to work on. Specially the parts that don't show error codes, like the bank angle sensor. I was three weeks fixing that one. I think the record I'm going to shatter is the 1000 CC stock engine and frame record. I'm not like Aaron, I'm into simple/convenient. I won't garner any respect. 1. Open box pull out new motorcycle. 2. Haul motorcycle to Utah shatter record. 3. Haul motorcycle home. 4. Place trophy on mantel. Paul

Friends My S2 has finally suffered a failure and I need your advice as to the best method of repair. The bike seams to have a broken transmission detent spring. I have not yet tried to remove the engine cover and am reluctant to remove the exhaust headers. Is it going to be necessary to remove the exhaust headers in order to gain access to the dent spring? I did not want to proceed without obtaining some suggestions from you folks. Sure appreciate your suggestions and help. I found the Knowledge Vault to be really large and not knowing where to look for this information, figured I would post my help request in the Genera Discussion area. Thanks Jim

If you are referring to the detent plate, it is inside the primary, on the left side of the bike. You should NOT have to remove your headers to get your primary off. |

***FOR TRADE*** I have a stock header on my S2 that the previous owner had installed a complete air/fuel metering system that I'm hoping to trade for another stock unmodified header in nice shape. The header has an oxygen sensor in the rear pipe that works in conjunction with an LED air/fuel meter guage that is mounted in the fairing. The LEDs dance around and constantly show you your lean, rich, or ideal state of carburation while you're riding. This is a jetting tinkerers dream but something that I'm not into playing with. I would like to trade the entire setup(head pipe, oxygen sensor, wiring, air/fuel guage) for another stock header in real nice condition or make me an offer for the whole shabang, before e-bay eventually gets it. I have digital pics of the setup, just drop me a note and I'll e-mail them. Thanks, Dana-C

Where have all the Buellers gone?. Living here in Portland Oregon, I have noticed very few Buells on the road in the past year, and have seen not even one of the new style 900cc bikes, though the shop folks say they have been selling them ? Is this a local thing or are we becoming a rare itme on the road ?... Jim |

Hey guys its been a while since I have been around these boards. I don't get to my computers as much as I used to. I was just stopping in to see what was going on and to say hello! I am in the Kansas City area. I was on the boards here a couple years ago. I'm still Buell'n! I updated my profile with my current email addy! Have a good weekend! |

Tripper, Man I feel bad about that! I got lazy and never got around out there to pick that up! Let me know how much to ship it back to me and I will get it out of your hair! I saw the KC mob section, seemed like something was going on this weekend! I was a bit too late on my return. I remember a couple of the guys you rode with were good guys, although I have to say I felt a bit out of place in your circle. Maybe its cus im a young one! Only minor troubles from the bike lately. Love the air intake system! I still get a little cough through the carb and filter every once in a while but nothing major. That and this stupid brake light problem. I want to do so much more but unfortunatly my wallet doesn't. Ahwell such is life! I will try to check in regularly around these parts. Good to talk to you again. |

i have a detonation question. i had very bad detonation due to an intake manifold leak (a loud clatter.) i fixed the leak but now i get a much softer noise that could almost be confused with the intake snort. i have recently switched to a full race setup, without the ecm (99m2) because i haven't had an oppertunity to get my tps re-zeroed. because this is a new mod, and i don't have any other buells to compare it to, i'm wondering if this noise may be normal. thinking she was running too lean i bought larger slow jets and tried them out. when i got the carb off, i found that the previous owner had added a 45 jet and turned the idle screw out four and one half turns. i pulled the 45 and placed the 48 and still the same noise when i run the bike (fun to do in the pouring rain we had here last night). when i had to remove the rear head to drill out a broken exhaust stud i noticed a good amount carbon on the top of the piston. i know the previous owner did nothing else to the bike but fiddle with the carb. is it possible that he was running much too rich and that sound is detonation due to a load of carbon on the piston? should i try retading the the timing a few degrees? is this because i have not installed the race ecm? whaddaya think -pat |

I didn't realize that the '99-M2's had a TPS sensor that needed to be re-zeroed...learn something new everyday! Guess I was just lucky with mine. |

Ah Boys, 99 M2s DO NOT have a TPS to be re-zeroed. Only the fuel injected S3/X1s have that. As for the race ignition module(not ECM) available for M2s. It's a waste of money. All it does is give you a full 6,800 rpms until the rev limiter kicks in whereas the stock module starts just cuts it back a little earler but still gives 6,800 rpms. Aaron has covered this MANY times. |

ecm and race ignition module come on same instruction sheet. i was not paying that much attention to directions because i had no intentions on installing the unit...i have no need to redline my buell motor as it is. if the race ignition in any way interacted with the voes, then it may be of use. still does not address my problem of the many sounds detonation makes in a buell motor. -pat |

Pat, I think you are right with respect to the carbon buildup causing detonation. As Dan implies, the only difference between the stock and race ignition module for your Cyclone is that the timing curve of the stock module starts to retard ignition by a few degrees at 6,200 rpm. Both will rev freely to 6,800 rpm. There are aerosol products on the market that have produced good results in removing carbon from combustion chambers. One other thing to consider... excess oil mist carried by the crankcase breather exhaust can cause carbon deposits to build up in the combustion chamber. If you have excessive oil mist exiting via the crankcase breather, you may want to consider having a reputable shop rehone or even overbore your cylinders and put in a new set of rings. Note that overboring will also require a new pair of pistons to match.

Wow neil , i have had many sensor plates go bad , but the result was "no spark" , never had anything like that happen! The way the timing marks look i guess this was the purple bike (1996)? those scribe marks that i see, is that a result of "timing adjustments" and if i am correct on the year , then is that the original sensor? |

Pat did the previous owner have the head breather still going into the air breather? How many miles are on the bike? The noise you hear is it all the time or just when you start out in first or get on the gas hard? If you have a fair amount of miles on the bike it could be the oil deposits on the pistons causing the noise as Blake said. Buell and Harley put the head breathers in to the air breather so it can be burned if and when any oil is blown out. EPA reasons. Remove that from the air breather if it is as the factory did it. Some after market people have the same set up. Make it go to a catch can or separate breather. You can read about this in the archive section to further explain. You can go to a different ignition modal with a selectable curve option. A better ignition choice. You can read about this also in the archives. |
