there is a threaded bolt on the left side of bottom crankcase with a large nut on it. i loosened this thinking it was the oil drain plug. oops! i couldnt get it out completely because the bolt wouldn't come out all the way. i ended up using something that messed up the threads. i screwed it back in and it wont tighten at all. any ideas??? thanks

That stud with the locknut on it is the primary chain adjuster.

XB engine oil drain plug is located on the bottom left side of the swingarm.

Tranny drain is about 8" further back of the primary adjuster nut in the center case.

Jax-
the Buell is a vey easy bike to work on, but to save yourself headaches, money and damage to bike I would like to suggest that you get the owners manual and read it befor taking out bolts or adding fluids etc. This web site is a treasure of info and help but please help yourself also. Sorry about the lecture. The stuff Hardley sells for the trany. is probably the best there were reports early on (06 model Uly's)that some of the other oils broke down the coating on the stator coil wires and thus required swapping out the stator.Welcoms to the forum and enjoy your awesome bike.

PSO, thanks for the info. i bought my HD VROD new a few years ago and had all the manuals, so i did it all the work myself. i sold it last year. bummer!!! I knew that bike very well and LOVED IT! This bike was aquired from a friend that is no longer with us and I dont have anything on it, unfortunately. I really dont like it that much because of my last bike, my VROD. I think i am going to just sell it. Thank you so much for your input. I am an engineer so i like to do as much as i can on my vehicles. I have a cigarette type boat with a big block 454 in it that i spend alot of time fixing things, changing fluids ect....i tried that bolt because it was on the bottom and appeared to me to be the drain plug. thats what i get for not doing it, like you said. i just cant get the thing to tighten at all now. not sure what to do at thia point. I haven't ridden it yet and not sure what/if anything will be wrong with it due to that not tightening. again, thanks and if you have any ideas on how to tighten it, that would be great.

take care,
Jack

Losen the lock nut, Open the observation window and turn the adjustment bolt in till you have the proper primay chain slack, then holding the adjuster bolt w/if memory serves me correctly a screwdriver tighten the lock nut. Make sure you haev adjusted the primary chain to spec or you may encounter major problems. I read that Buell had developed the vrod engine but that Hardly butched them off and took the engine for that bike and left Buell high and dry. Tuned properly, it would have been a great sport touring bike engine.Good luck on your adjstment, it makes all the diffenernce in the world for how the bike feels while riding.
