How does it act if you rev it up in neutral?

like power drops off. ill be accelerating and as soon it hits 4000 it coughs and jerks just as if i had reved it up then let go of the throttle. i'm new to the x1 but it does seem the idle is a little rough and in neutral it seems to rev fine past 4000 but i dont usually rev it up that high in neutral so i cant say for certain

Could it be something dumb like the throttle cables being adjusted wrong?
If you open the throttle (when it's off!) can you verify that the butterfly is opening all the way?
My original cables frayed so that it felt like it was opening but was actually hitting a "knot".

like natexlh1000 said make sure the butterfly is opening.my friends 99s3 had the same problem.opened throttle ran like dog ,iddle ran fine 2000to 3000 rpm. the butterfly arm was broke on the left hand side. looked at it with flash lite seen what was going on and had to replace the whole throttle body.
