I saw a 9R last week on Ebay that was listed as having a Heli-bar modification. This got my curiousity up so I emailed Heli-bar. Here is the response:

Hi Andy!

Thank you for your recent inquiry. We have actually just developed
something for the XB9R Firebolt. What we will soon be offering is what
we call the 'Heli Performer Top Triple Clamp'. This replacement triple
clamp will retain your stock handlebars, which will be 1" taller and 1
1/2" more rearward than the stock position. All of your stock cables
and hydraulic lines will also be retained. We will have two different
finishes available. For $295.00 we have an aluminum machined finish,
part # HC0301. We will also have a black anodized finish, which will
have machined aluminum 'Heli' highlights for $320.00, part # HC0301B.
We will also be offering optional titanium hardware for $30.00. We
should have these available to start shipping and posted on our web site
in the next couple of weeks. If there is anything else that I can help
you with at this time please don't hesitate to contact me at any time.
Thanks again!

Sincerely,
Jaime / Sales

Kind of interesting, yes?

That would make the R perfect for me (with the additional S footpegs...)

Here is a picture of the Heli-clamp, they just sent it to me.
I've been looking at doing something like this for a while; primarily custom bars.
At $295 I'm not sure 1"up and 1.5" back is enough.

Any other ideas out there?

Darkside...

When I was riding the XBR, I thought to myself that if the bars were about an inch and a half higher than the stock position, I would be fine with it. I think the 1 1/2" back is a decent compromise with the inch up position.

I was also wondering how a standard helibar set up would work (clip onto the forks)....I know there would be the old triple tree clamps up front that would look out of place then...

It would be nice if BMC offered risers for the R that would clamp into the existing mounts.

Not from Buell, but they use the stock upper triple clamp. Dunno if they ever actually produced any or not.

I think they said that the cost was too much, so they never made any.

Could be wrong though.

Bryan,

Last year I talked to Tat about his handlebar risers & he's not going to make them because what looked like a good idea didn't quite meet his high standards.

A better solution would be a new top triple clamp, he said. Maybe this Heli setup is it. It appears to offer about the same relocation as Tat's riser, so it should be about perfect. My neck needs one.

What about buying a top clamp off an sb9s then adding risers and any bar that suites?

4 problems with that:
1) you have to fabricate a new ignition switch location, and
2) you lose the fork lock because the ignition switch is relocated, then
3) new bars would have to be designed to clear everything, resulting in
4) new longer control cables and hydraulic hoses being likely.

Tat was glad to hear of Heli's offering and is seeing about stocking this item as well as the custom top triple clamp he was having made for the Firebolt when they're available.

One advantage I can see for Heli's clamp is that one could easily switch back and forth from touring to sport just by swapping triple clamps and controls.

If anyone is interested in doing exactly as SteelShoe has mentioned above and using an XB9S top triple clamp & bar of choice, please let me know as I'd like to trade mine for the triple clamp/handlebar setup from a 9R. I'm trying to lower the bars on my 9S.

I've seen a local guy on a 9R (which he's sellinng, BTW) who used the 9S triple clamp along with some Honda (XR?) handlebar. Looks clean and works nice. I don't remember him making it sound major so...

If I see him at any local hangs this week I'll get a more detailed description of what was done.

Thanks Cap,
I checked the dollar conv. chart, that would cost over $700 bucks!!! Think I'll stick to xb9s only because of bars, I'll be getting mine in week or 2. S model leaves me wondering about what bags will go on it, differant delema than R.

Another option may be this set up being designed for the 9S by Crossroads Performance. It may fit the R with the use of an S upper triple clamp, I don't know.

If I were to put a 9S clamp on the 9R It would be perfect without that other gadget bolted to it but, as someone else pointed out the ignition switch will have to be remounted elsewhere, don't these inventors realize that some of us have short arms and deep pockets?

Just received the Heli bars from Tat at American Sportbike.
I love them!
