Need help with ignition. As soon as I put key in on position motor turns over but doesn't start. Also blows ignition fuse right away. I've replaced the ignition switch and all 3 relays any Ideas. |

You put the key in the On position and the engine starts cranking but no start. Does it start cranking without you pressing the Start button? |

Yes as soon as I turn the key to on. You don't need to push the start button. |

Is your start button fried in the "on" position, then? All that should be happening when you turn the key to on, with the kill switch on, is the whine of the fuel pump, a sweep of the tach and speedo by the needles, and your check engine and oil lights coming on. No engine start action should occur until you press the start button, so if that is happening, your start button my be toast, but "toast-engaged (fried, but in the "on" position, permanently). |

Checked switch it's fine. I found one of the two diods bad. Would this cause this. |

I pulled the neutral switch wire. Now it doesn't turn over with key on but as soon as you pull in the clutch motor turns over. Also blows ignition fuse rigt away. |

This could be a number of things: 1) a wiring issue in the wires up to the right handlebar switch related to the start button or 2) a possible short circuit in the start switch itself or 3) a defective Start Relay (in the relay cluster) or 4) a wiring issue with the Start Relay. That it blows the Ignition Fuse pretty much means a short in the wiring somewhere, but because the starter cranks, that infers a hot wire inadvertently shorting to the green wire that runs from the Start Relay to the Starter Solenoid. If you pull the Start Relay, does the starter begin cranking by itself with the key on (and a good Ignition Fuse)? -- If yes, then examine the green wire from the Start Relay to the Starter Solenoid and look at the back side of the Relay Cluster around the Start Relay socket for wires touching or bad workmanship. -- If no, then we're got a different path to check out. Further troubleshooting follows... |

OK, with the Starter Relay out and a good Ignition Fuse in and with the key on, it does not crank. That's nominal. So, if you have a VOM, connect the + lead to terminal 86 of the Start Relay socket with relay removed and the - lead to engine ground; set VOM to read +12 DC volts. Note: Terminal 86 wire goes to the Start Button. -- With key on, VOM should read 0 VDC. ----If yes, press Start button; VOM should read battery voltage. That's nominal. ----If no and it reads battery voltage, further troubleshooting is needed to locate a shorted hot wire to the Start Relay terminal 86 (relay coil +). |

one more test I did If hook a light across the Pos battery to left side of fuse holder it Lights and the start relay ticks. If I put the light across the right side fuse holder I have to put the cable on Neg Bat post to light the bulb. Also I unhooked the netural switch and the kick stand switch now you turn the key on nothing happens as soon as you engage the clutch lever it turns over you don't have to push start. Could the cluch switch be shorted. |

All these symptoms point to a hot wire shorting to one of the wires at the Start Relay socket. Possibly these wires are involved: -- a tan/lt green wire goes from the Start Relay to the clutch switch and one of the diodes that blew, -- a red/blk wire goes from the Key Switch Relay socket to the Start Relay socket and gets powered with the Key On. I'd suggest removing the Relay Cluster and look very carefully at the wiring and the wiring insulation in that area. Another problem area with XB Lightnings reported here is with wire insulation wearing out and shorting around the steering neck area especially if the harness moves against the frame by turning the handlebars. I'm afraid the "one more test" you did is inconclusive. It would help if you could identify the color of the wires at the fuse terminals for those with wiring schematics and are following this discussion. I'm guessing it was the Ignition Fuse you were testing and, if so, your results are probably normal. |

Is the wiring diagram for a XB9R and XB9S the same. If not does anyone have a pdf of a XB9S I could purchase. |

I think the wiring is essentially the same although some components are physically arranged differently. Why not just buy the Factory Service manual from a sponsor? |
