Does anyone know of something I can do to quiet this sucker down (bass drone) without removing it? I'm on the verge of spending good money on getting another stocker installed, which I cringe at doing since I thought it was too quiet. What about throwing wads of aluminum foil in the can? Would that buffet the bass drone? The highway riding is killing my ears, even through the best ear protection money can buy. |

Okc99. Check my post on baffles. I give decibel ratings for the insert Kevin used to carry. Unfortunately could not test the $35 Jardine. www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/49655 0.html?1253403448#POST1584122. I have tried triple flange plugs, custom molded plugs, bell shaped plugs etc but the best I have found are the 30-33db rated bullet shaped plugs you can buy in bulk at Wallmart or K-mart. Key though, they only work when fresh enough they can be rolled like toothpicks and inserted in your ear up to the very end. If older they will expand too quick to be inserted all the way. Once they expand, the "drone" will be gone. If they are not fresh enough to stay packed tight until inserted, they will not provide full coverage and the increase in noise will be dramatic. Even my plugs that I had left from last year, but still unused, did not attenuate the noise to a satisfactory level. Bought a new batch and all was right again. So, try fresh bullet plugs inserted like toothpicks deep in the ear, or get some baffles. The only cure under $20 though will be a $20 batch of Kmart foamies or the "bolt and fender washer" in the outlet trick Treadmarks once described. |

I'm showing my outlet on the drummer is 2.75 inches in diameter. Jardine inserts seems to only go up to 2.25 inches. http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/2/9/187/13846 /ITEM/Jardine-Quiet-Module-Insert.aspx Am I missing something? |

OKC, How many miles are on your Drummer? Mine has over 60,000 miles on it, and is noisier than hell. I can even hear something rattling around in it. I'm sure it is completly blown out. This winter I'm sending it to Kevin for a repack/rebuild......... (Message edited by debueller on November 03, 2009) |

Just curious if anyone's opened one up and packed it with steel wool? That's standard procedure on the old Buell race cans, and on a lot of aftermarket pipes (Jardine comes to mind). I love my Drummer on the Uly...around town and in the hills, up and down thru the gears and playing with the throttle. Riding from MD to GA/TN/NC and back for Buelltoberfest...it got more than a little "drone-y" on the highway. Maybe I'm getting old. |

I bought my Drummer used and it never sounded as good as others I heard. When the rattling started soon after I opened it up and found there was no packing at all and the screen was banging around on the floor of the can. As an experiment I re-wrapped the guts with boating repair fiberglass mat and it was better. I've got it apart again and I'm thinking about having the dings and dents fixed and repacking again, probably with some higher-tech packing this time. |

If you have it apart, use steel wool. The Buell race cans and Jardines all come packed with glass mat, and it disintegrates pretty much every season. Steel wool is a longtime 'trick' to get more seasons out of each repack, it doesn't come apart or melt like the 'glass does. How much of a difference did packing it make when you first did it? |

Made a big difference, didn't sound hollow any more, but still not as mellow as a new Drummer (if you can consider a Drummer mellow!). The only reservation I'd have with steel wool is rust. |

Most steel wool is made from stainless, since it's usually used for washing/scrubbing stuff... David - you're relocated to the DC area, yes? I'd be interested in hearing your baffled exhaust. Ease of install definitely wins points in my book! |

I wonder if I'm going to lose any hp/torque with a baffle in place? Any thoughts? |

Oh the humanity. That just hurts to look at. Some options for you: 1) OxyClean (it removes anything, even rust) 2) Bedazzler, cause rhinestones can dress anything up. 3) Wrap it with aluminum foil; aka poor man's chrome. |

Other BadWebber's mufflers... I don't have that problem in So CA. I was unaware that steel wool was stainless, I remember getting chewed out for leaving wet SOS pads in my mom's sink where they'd leave a nice rusty mark... |

It looks like some sort of unexploded WWII dam buster bomb that someone dug out of a farmyard in France. Anyone remember the PBS show "Danger: UXB"? Coming soon to the Speed channel: "Danger: RUM (Rusty Uly Muffler)". |

Would it really have cost that much more if the whole can was SS, or aluminized? I'd have paid it. |

Xbimmer, Can you please remove these images from this thread? It's about as pleasant as watching a baby seal get clubbed. |

The baffle arrived today, but I wont' have access to a drill till Monday. Here is a pic. I don't know if it supposed to stick out or insert into the muffler tip. It's a VERY tight fit either way. I need a hammer to tap it in so far.

Insert in, not sticking out. What's the ID of your muffler outlet, and the OD of the new baffle? Looks like that could work for me...but I have an OLD Drummer, which I think might have a different spout size. Curious how it works out - keep us posted! |

Nevermind...I just read up further, you say your outlet is 2.75". Duh |

Are you sure it's supposed to go inside? I measured it to be about 2.75 but Kevin told me it has to be 2.5...so it must be? Here is a better pic. It's hard to believe that this does not seriously reduce airflow by 70% or higher seeing as the surface area of the holes couldn't add up to much. Maybe more back pressure is good? Note: the bottom of the baffle is solid, not perforated.

The open area of all those holes is much larger than it appears, probably more than the actual ID of the pipe. |

Hi, I just got an insert from Kevin and am very happy with it. It takes the real low thud out of it and it actually has improved the low and mid torque seat of the pants feel. I only have about 150 miles on it so far. You position the cone in so that it is right up against the weld between the outlet pipe and the muffler body. It is also pretty easy to get out. I drilled the 1/4" bolt so that I could put in a cotter pin. I was afraid that just the lock washer would work loose after a while. I calculated the sum of all the drilled holes and it is close to 2 square inches which as Kevin pointed out is about the same as the ID of the header pipe. BTW he runs one on his bike too.

That would do the trick. Although not marked USFS approved it looks as if it would serve as a good spark arrestor when riding in the national forest where I live. Thank You for this info. |
