Aw shucks, it was easy, after all the Russians taught a monkey how to fly a space ship... It was the upppr case v. lower case brackets that threw me. I'll probably forget how I did it by tomorow. I'll practive by posting some sea pics for Hans. You probably saw this one of the sunrise in Pelican Bay, (Brookings).

Ever wonder what a crab is thinking. I think that one is thinking.. "I'm f#%ked, soon as he takes this picture, he's gonna cook my ass and eat me." or... "Mmmmm, I'd like to run across that dude after he's been lying dead on the bottom of the ocean for a few days." (crabs revenge) |

ZX12's and Busa's doing the double ton at Bonneville! You're 'avin a larf right? As an EXPERIENCED (LOL) Salt Racer, I can tell ya even if you came away with nothing but the experience, that indeed is really really something. Rooster tailing Jack's mighty S1 off the start line was an awesome feeling as was pegging it way past 140 but I tell ya what, even if you don't ride the Salt the friendships and fun found is worth the trip alone. I too don't know if I can make it this year but I'm gonna try, either way I'll throw in for Peter providing he wears the tutu Rocket |

Anyone else notice mistakes in their service manual? My 99 X1 manual doesn't mention the removable side plates for the isolators, the procedure for checking the ignition coil is wrong (the picture and the procedure), diagrams don't show the removable passenger peg brackets, the wheel internal parts diagram is wrong, etc... Most of the info seems to be direct from the '96 (online) manual, and not updated to reflect changes. Probably fixed in later manuals? |

Paul: here are the rules and here are the records Your Gixxer could be easily configured to run: 1000cc P-P: 178.667 1000cc MPS-G: 181.448 1000cc MPS-F: 223.353* * - owned by Joe Amo with a Kawasaki. I've gotten to know him well. Joe worked his ass off with this bike for ten years before he ever broke 200. Lost a bunch of motors along the way. He runs a big pile of nitrous on that baby. He's my definition of a racer! Your 'busa could be easily configured to run: 1350cc P-P: 201.708 1350cc MPS-G: 220.553 1350cc MPS-F: 202.656

Joe Amo was impressive on last nights Motorcycle Land Speed Racing special on the Discovery Channel. Errors in service manuals are not unheard of, hence the form in the back for reporting them. The folks a Technical Publications have a detailed audit procedure prior to releasing the books. The challenge is that sometimes the bike is not done before the book needs the info. I, anal retentive geek I am, bought the Technical Manual for my 1987-1/2 Sportster prior to buying the bike and mailed in 7 errors prior to being an onwer. The 1999 X1 had removable sideplates? Hmmmm... |

The front wheel (axle) exploded diagram in my 2000 M2 manual is wrong (as I recall). There oughta be a knowledge vault section for this stuff, with corrections, so if anyone has details start a topic there. |

Thanks Aaron. I'm looking at the PP for the Gix, at 178, that record is below the 187 restrictor. After '00 the Busas and Gixs are restricted to 187, hard to beat a 200+ record on a restricted bike. I want you to know you have brought my logging operation to a standstill. Hmmm...back to the rules page...what can be done to a P engine....gotta bypass the speed limiter... Paul |

You can change several things on a P/P class bike. It just has to look stock and use stock pieces where they can be seen. The electronics can be changed and limiter bypassed. You still won't get near 200 mph untill you get a few more HP though. |

No flame intended, but i gotta know Aaron. How much do you have wrapped up in the Bonnnie Buell? I'm taking a wild guess, but to Cecil, it's dollars and sense, (which he has none.) He's looking at the total cost you have into your Buell to go 208 mph. His logic being that if you started with a bike that already has 170hp out of the box, and THEN added the amount of dough you put into the Buell, you'd have a seriously fast bike. Maybe even a little faster than the Buell. |

Mikey, it ain't that simple to add up. There was lots of wheeling and dealing and horsetrading and I received a lot of help from sponsors, most notably Cycle-Rama and Frontline. |

>>>His logic being that if you started with a bike that already has 170hp out of the box, and THEN added the amount of dough you put into the Buell, you'd have a seriously fast bike. Maybe even a little faster than the Buell. The Bonneville Salt Flats, THE world venue for Land Speed Records, exists precisely for the reason of removing such doubt. Jim Bantz has the Team Elves financial records (I think there is info on the website) but, ignoring Aaron's time (Cecil may elect to pay himself wages to do the work) we're in a lot cheaper than some think. Bear in mind too, that we "borrowed" some of the parts and returned them afterward. One thing that the Hayabusa and some of the other "look fast" bikes lack are the Buell aerodynamics. Most street bikes ignore real aerodynamics in favor of "fast looking pointy" stuff. If there were supersonic they'd be fine. Subsonic is an entirely different science. Cecil also would appear to be ignoring the rule of diminishing returns but I agree that it would be interesting. I hope someone, wanting to set Aaron straight, actually DOES something. Could be cool! Hey Court, i'm all down with the Buell being slippery, it's the only way the bike can go so fast. OK, i'll put it this way, theroreticaly, how much money do you think the Bonnie Buell cost if i were to duplicate it? |

It takes BIG BRAINS and PASSION to go that fast, along with a VERY comfortable pair of shoes to stand in for 100's and 100's of hours. To ask "how much" just shows the lack of the first! Id bet the farm , that if you gave brain 10 times the "so called" amount he would'nt be able to even "show up" at bonneville. Just my MEANINGLESS opinion. |

Mike, It's meaningless. It doesn't matter how much money Cecil throws at a 12, he's still not eligible to compete in the classes that the Buell was setup to take records in. As Aaron said earlier, if he wants to compete in outtright speed, he still has to take the record away from a Harley. |

Hmmmm.....you know, as I ponder on this, I'm beginning to realize just how damn cheap we did it. Part, I suppose, of the process is the ability to align oneself with a variety of skilled folks. I wanted to snicker when, during the Discovery Channel special on Motorcycles at Bonneville, they indicated that it was "very expensive" and that Don Vesco's effort had cost nearly $150,000. My guess would have been closer to 7 figures. Determining "THE cost" gets a little like trying to stomp oiled balloons. Does the cost of the bike count? Aaron stole the RR he has. Do you mean "what an RR would cost if you bought it today?". What about the Guzzi guys who had the bike "loaned" by Moto Guzzi of North America. Frankly, if I could nail the $$ down, I think it'd surprise lots of folks. In addition, we were rediculously parsimonious given that we were dealing with OPM (other peoples money). As as example, Team Elves did NOT pay for Richard Nallins plane ticket or room in Wendover. Think we should toss that in ? I'm not blowing off the question, just scratching my noggin'. Now you have me thinking damnit...and I almost NEVER think! Court |

Cecils logic being that if you started with a bike that already has 170hp out of the box, and THEN added the amount of dough you put into the Buell, you'd have a seriously fast bike. Maybe even a little faster than the Buell. Duh, no fucking shit Sherlock and you wouldn't be in the same class either. They also could put all of the available resourses together and built a seriously fast motorcycle streamliner that would be faster than anything one could buy in the marketplace. They also could of bought an OLD used 2000 Busa for 2/3's less the price of the RR and the donor bike. Then built the motor up, modified the bodywork, extended the swingarm and put a turbo on the puppy and run against John Noonan in HIS class. So what? John told me he put 10 grand in his engine and turbo and I'm sure that didn't include labor or some of the parts he gets discounted. Plus it hasn't all stayed together since he started racing. -JW:>

This is why we (meaning those in my field in my neck of the woods) can’t compete in the marketplace nowadays. Everyone isn’t held to the same rules and standards, even when you’re on the same job. Where’s OSHA when you need them (or anyone else that gives a flying fuck). -JW:> |
