So here it is - no issues before i parked the bike for 2 months. Then i took the bike out for a 20 minute ride and towards the end of the ride i notice my bike pulled slightly when in 1st gear and clutch pulled in. I adjusted the cable to tighten the slack and it was fixed for what it seemed. Today i started the bike and when i put it in gear it jolted forward with the clutch pulled in. To make it worse, the clutch lever stays pulled in and won't release and spring to the original position, almost like the cable's broke, but it isn't. Took the derby cover off and see that the clutch 'arm' (part that holds the cable) doesn't snap back and pull the clutch cable like it used to. any suggestions? It's an 08xb12s with 10K miles.

Well, I was going to say the clutch cable, but maybe the mechanism that helps pull the clutch plates apart. Either that or the springs in there, but I doubt that. Make certain your clutch cable isn't fraying anywhere and pulling apart. If that's not the problem then check the clutch release mechanism is not failing or loose.

Reason I mention the clutch release mechanism is because in that area there's a lock nut and spring that holds the lock nut in place. I believe if that were to come apart (ie: spring breaks and lock nut comes loose) then you would pull the clutch all the way in with nothing happening. It's easy to check that area. Just pull the inspection cover off and take a look. Do you have a service manual?

Yeah i took the derby cover off and the adjustment screw was TIGHT so i turned it clockwise and reset it to the service manual's spec (bottom out then 1/4 to 1/2 clockwise). I have a feeling that it's pretty messed up. I'm under warranty until april so i guess I'll take it in, i'm just scared they'll tell me the clutch is a normal wear item and not covered. Thoughts?

Is the primary cover itself ok? There are some ridges that the ball ramp assembly uses to disengage the clutch. If one of the lips/ridges breaks or cracks the symptoms you described happens. It looks something like this when it happens.

bman- would i need to take a portion, or all of the clutch assembly out to see this or would removing the derby cover alone show me these lips? I'm afraid to remove any part of the clutch and not know how to properly put it back in place

You may have to remove the ball and ramp assembly. I would suspect that if those ridges are cracked or broken, you'd be able to tell just by looking in there with the cover off but I'm not positive.

Krueger, hopefully you can tell without taking the ball and ramp assembly out but if you can't, here's a link that explains how to remove it.

BTW, Sanchez from the link calls the ball ramp assembly the clutch for some reason.

And if the retaining lips are broken ,look in the Knowledge vault area under primary drive : primary cover repair.
It is a clear how to ,and i did it almost the same way!
Now it,s better than new!!

Anyone know the stroke of the clutch lifter(?) mechanism?

Thanks for the help guys. I'll use your advice to get myself pointed in the right direction but i'll probably end up taking it into the shop to see if my warranty covers it. Hopefully it's something fluke like a broken cast-aluminum lip so it's obvious to the shop that they own it and i'm off the hook!

Hey brother, thanks 4 the advice, the retainer lips WERE broken! The Buell shop of baltimore's gonna replace the primary and inspect the clutch for damages. Thank god for that 2 year warranty! Thanks again everyone
