So I have heard that there was a baffle that could quiet down the rumble of the muffler? Is this true or just a myth? Anyone ever heard of such a thing? The local officer was at my work clocking out to go home the other day and walked back to see me sitting on the bike and asked when I was going to put the baffle back in the muffler? Yeah he knows that I didn't run a baffle in the sportster for a short time. Has anyone with a D&D gotten a ticket for running their bikes with that muffler on? | ||

I don't know of any baffle that works for the D&D, but I do know of someone that has gotten ticketed over it. One of the locals here had a Saron pipe and had to get rid of it because he got several tickets in less than a month. | ||

Ran mine in Oregon for a good 6 months with no issues. I ended up taking it off though because it got too loud for me on 300 + mile rides. | ||

I live in the Dallas/Ft.Worth area and stopped by the D&D factory in Ft.Worth to find out if they make a quieter baffle. They do not. So I'll have to get creative and see what I can fabricate. | ||

Buy a vortex cone. They install in headers on cars they work great.I've seen someone install them they work great.Ill get up a link if someone gives me a id tube dimension. | ||

I agree Blackflash. Here is a link (below)to the Vortex inserts and another from "www.carchemistry.com". Both do work very well. They only decrease DB's by a small amount, maybe 3-5 DB but really take out the loud, harsh noise of most straight through mufflers with almost no decrease in performance if built right. However they do not come in small enough sizes for most motorcycle pipes. I made my own vortex's from perforated steel I bought from McMaster-Carr and the Carchemistry ones from tubing and sheet metal. I've been running mine for almost 2 years now and no tickets (for the pipe at least)even with the sometimes overzealous Tx DPS. When I moved a couple towns over I was a bit paranoid. This town had a problem with Tuner scene and cracking down heavily on racing and even putting an undercover "racer" to instigate them, pretty sad. But after living here a year and riding up on city,county and DPS no noise tickets. No guarantees in the future though. I put a homemade baffle in mine,cuts a little of the sharp bark. I've also seen and heard the D&D baffle at the strip. It didn't really seem any quieter than mine without. It was just a perforated tube with some packing of some sort in it. | ||

just thought that someone on here had made a baffle and it toned it down somewhat. I guess that I will start welding one up this week and let everyone know how it goes and do a comparison to really hear the difference, so stay tuned for more info. | ||

blazin is there any packing your using in conjunction with the baffle? | ||

you could: get your self some rather large EYE bolts, bravely drill a hole to fit the eye inside the end of your beloved pipe, and lastly snug it up with some wave/double spring washers. then you'll be able to tune the noise (and the seemingly inseparable back pressure) to your or the LEO's liking with the angle of said eye bolt. | ||

Blazin what size pipe did you go with? I am looking at going longer, but am going to try and keep the original baffle and do some work with a slip in insert using the existing mounting screws. | ||

Backflash, yes I used some MX packing from Moose racing. Rb, it depends on how long you make it as to the dia. since it's a cone one end needs to be smaller than the other. If you have the D&D baffle already in there then that should make it easier . From what I remember in seeing the one at the strip I think their baffle was the same dia. all the way thru. You could call them and check the size though. Hope this helps somewhat. |
