I am close to buying a used Blast for my SO Mari. The Blast will be her first time in with the grips in her hands. I have skimmed the available information here and took note of the 2003 upgrades and intake boot replacements. As some of what I read seemed a little dated . . .would anyone care to bring me up to speed on recent developments that I should use in my decision?

The potential field includes several bikes older bikes (2001-2003) as well as one of a group of newer "Rider's Edge" veterans now being offered with 2 year warranties.

Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

Don

Get a 2003 or above, then no gasket changes should need to be done. See Dan's superboot on EBAY - last boot you'll probably ever need. If later you want to punch up the stock power - see my notes in the KV section for 8 mods for a stock bike to increase power.

Welcome to the Thumper Forum!
Buy price, they are pretty much the same and it is always a crap shoot when it comes to prior abuse and maintence. The good thing is the Blast is very durable and handles abuse well.
There is no significant difference between the models from 2001-present though the newer ones seem to have less pattern failures of such things like the ignition module, rear wheel bearing bore enlargement and "DO NOT REMOVE" bracket bolts.

If you can get a well kept newer Blast with warranty and have a decent dealer that is a great plan, I got a used bike, I could have gotten a 05 blue with 495 miles, that owner got that one and it blew up for what ever reason( I found out they used wrong oil), HD did replace his engine at a greatly reduced cost, my 06 had 2725 miles and went for $2500 where as lower mileage one went for $2995. but mine had warranty from May 08 to Nov 09.
It help greatly as I was struggling financially and needed dependable transportation and didnt need to have to wait to save cash for any un-known repairs coming up.
Dont get me wrong my issues was with lack of skill of previous repairs (ie improperly reinstalled rear sprocket when tire was replaced before my purchase, cost HD a rear wheel and sprocket).
Other than the improper installation of the front bolts when they replace the isolator and a oil leak at end of riding season (which actually got fixed before 09 riding time)the bike has been trouble free except the gas cap oring is bad allowing water into the tank, I have new on ordered, just need to pick it up.
BUT if you do have issues the warranty can help.
Other than that these little bikes will make all your riding friends take a second look.
My Blast did out corner a small cc GSXR and this with Dunlop on front and Pirelli on back.
Since I dont burn corners I am going to try a Michelin 140/70 Gold Standard as several around here in my area love them for mileage reasons and have yet to complain about traction. I really dont think any tire on them is bad , some dis the old Dunlops but mine never failed and I rode in 08 in all weather till after Thnaksgiving, rain and all and we had some hard rains and even in heavy standing water my Blast with both types of tire (dunlop and Pirelli) performed great.
And if there is a riders edge class near by, get her in to it. MANY ladies have looked at my bike, loved it and asked if they could sit on it.
There has been at least 25 ladies I know in my area that took the class after seeing my bike and asking questions and then moved on to a Blast or even bigger.
Your lady must be very special to rate a Blast, good luck, safe riding and welcome to the family.

the problem with the dunlop is it follows the groves in the road. we have some concrete roads with groves in them and it feels like the bike is dancing.
