To really do it right you need new cams, new ECM, new throttle body. You would need to know the pressure inside the intake (and not at the charcoal canister port) so the TB needs a new port, the ECM needs a new sensor so it needs to be replaced, and you really should have cams that do not overlap the intake and exhaust. Getting it certified at this point would be a difficult task so if it shows up, I doubt it would be anything except off road use. I would sooner see a really good RAM air intake on those early frames. Take the headlights out, install some really functional scoops, run the on the left side back to the frame cutout and up into the airbox. Do a lot of tuning to figure out how to get the mixture right without the pressure port in the TB and you are done. Not sure what you would gain, but it would be something or all the other bikes wouldn't be using it (including the XBRR). Not sure what classes would let you run a turbo on the track either. If it was pretty much open I would expect there would be several imports with turbos now. What about the mechanical supercharger kits for sporties? Pretty sure that could be adapted to an XB too, but again you have all that computer work and need to change the cams. Now all that said, I have a feeling that you could just regrind the cams so that the intake opened a few degrees later so it might not be a big deal. An ECM could be made, and it doesn't take a lot to modify the TB for a vacuum port in the proper location (well down after the throttle plate). After that it's just a matter of making the duct work and a new rubber piece to seal the airbox (transform the snorkle). The intercooler would be the hard part, better trickle some nitrous in there to cool off the air. Personally, I would go for a mechanical supercharger before a turbo. Don't need more than a few pounds of boost, and then there is no spool down point since you have boost running at idle if you want it. |

The one that would appeal to me wouldn't be a crazy all out monster... the "perfect" bike for me would be an XB9SX putting down about 110 RWHP at about 45 MPG, that is still "street quiet". It would be neat if that was doable with the updated oil pump, and a "bolt on" turbo kit that replaces the header, ECM, and intake plumbing. |

Greg, where are all of these Mechanical supercharger kits for sporties that you speak of? I have yet to see a Sportster with a Supercharger. The only HD QC motor I've seen with a supercharger is the XB that had the frame cut for it, and had single sided fork/swingarm. |

To really do it right you need new... To go all out you are correct, but most 'kits' don't go all out. Usually if you want to go all out, you make your own setup. Generally (with cars at least) 'turbo kits' come with the base parts needed to install and operate the turbo. Often times only at half the potential, but that's because it's a basic kit. Something you could build on if you wanted. That's precisely what I want. I don't want to go all out. I want a kit with the basic parts (Turbo, plumbing, ECM?!) That I can bolt on and ride! Optional add on Cams, TB, etc would be awesome, but shouldn't be in the basic kit. An 'all inclusive' kit will price itself out of the market. |

Rotax offers turbos and superchargers on their aircraft and PWC engines. Don't know if they're in-house or out sourced units, but I bet Erik saw some ideas while working on the 1125 specs. This would be fun to try to stuff into a bike frame: Engine Type 1503 HO 4-stroke 3 cylinder 12 valves 188 kW / 255 HP 1493.8 ccm External intercooler 2 water cooling circuits (one closed water cooling circuit) Dry sump lubrication 2 oil pumps with replaceable paper oil filter Mechanically driven supercharger |
