Okay, so I bought my bike about 3 months ago. It's an 01 X1 with 4500 miles. Has race ECM, and an aftermarket intake and exhaust. It started running weird three rides ago, bogging with hard acceleration. Next, the front cylinder stopped firing, pulled the plugs, checked gaps, cleaned fuel system, then it ran okay. Next ride, it wouldn't start, had to jump it, it ran but still with bogging at WOT. Now, I try to start and all I get is a muffled whine and clicking, even with a jump, only sometimes will it turn over... slowly. Any ideas on what this may be?? |

Awwwww, c'mon guys. I smelled the oil. In the crank case, it smells fine, in the oil tank it smells like exhaust. Any ideas?? |

How old is the battery? |

Get the battery tested and start from there. When there's an electrical issue on these bikes you see all sorts of seemingly "unrelated" problems. |

Battery. Once you are certain you have a good battery I'd check the stator output -- they don't have to burn up to be bad. Fuel injected X1 will act the fool over electrical problems. |

Cool, Battery is the first thing on the list!!! I'm sure it's dead anyways. Just went out and it doesn't respond even with a jump. Did check the grounds and they are clean now. Thanks for the replies though. I'll write back after I try the Batt. -JP |

Check your relays. You have one for the ignition and one for the starter. I had an issue and although the relay would "work" they were weak so I got the clicking like a dead batt. I don't recall which one was bad...I think I replaced both. They're only like $8-$10 from HD or your local auto parts store. Located under the tail in front of the oil tank. |

OK, added a a battery, but after riding it has to charge for a REALLY long time before the Battery Tender goes to storage mode. I'm guessing I'm running only on battery when I'm out. This means I need a stator, right?? |

Stator. I'd replace the stator and the VR and be done with it -- not the cheapest way to go, but it is the most efficient. |

STOP THE MADNESS! Go get a Factory Service Manual. It will explain EVERYTHING on how to properly test your bike so you don't waste your money... |

Sorry, Sloppy. Service manual is in the mail. I'll order the Stator/VR for now. |

OK, anyone know where I can order a VR?? I'm currently looking around, and can't seem to find one. Don't have a local Harley Dealer, so I need one shipped here. Any ideas?? I'll keep looking for now. |

Have you checked the stator output yet? its a real simple test with a VO meter. PM Ratbuell (Joe) he can find you an V/R if needed. |

Didn't check the output, but the wires are bare when you look at them, so I'm gonna just replace the whole shebang. I've searched around and I kind of get the feeling that all 3 parts need to be replaced eventually in most circumstances like mine, so instead of doing it the slow and possibly cheaper way, I'm just going for broke and hoping it does the job. What can I say, I'm inpatient. Thanks for all the help from everyone, hopefully the next post will say "It's Alive"... Hopefully. |
