Hey guys, well here's the deal. I just got my R back form the dealer. It had some work done for leaking rocker covers, fuel pump etc etc... Before i turned it in to the dealer i had ridden it for 70 some miles. Well i just got it back and on the 8 mile trip from the dealer to the house i noticed they had the fairing touching the exhaust header. Well now the shielding is burned and the plastic is starting to deform.. its not bad yet, but its getting there. i took it back immediatly (another 8 miles) and they claimed thats just hows things go, but they did add spacers to keep the fairing off the header. Heres my question.... I looked at the exhaust and the fairing and they really isn't any way to adjust either item to keep them from touching without a spacer added to the 2 bottom mounting points... So do other owners with fairing kits have spacers? I bought my R with the faring kit already installed so i dont know what all comes with the kit...Does the exhaust have enough movement in it to be adjusted out of the way? I still think i need to push the dealer to replace the fairing... the bike is brand spanking new with 133 miles on it.. Could someone post a pic of there setup showing any gap. I know my fairing was not touching the header before, but this dealer is trying to get out from paying for the damages.. | ||

If the side fairings were on the bike at the time of purchase and the dealer registered the part number with the warranty registration then it should be covered under warranty. If the dealer did not register the side fairing part number and it has been less then 60 days since the date of purchase they still can do it. Give me your VIN# and I can check if the side fairings were included with the warranty registration. I am not a Buell dealer but I believe this is the policy. On mine I wrapped the header with heat wrap, spaced out the fairing so there is a gap between the two, and I added extra stick on heat shield to the inside of the fairing. | ||

there is a tech tip covering this #419 dated 11/18, it states that you need to maintain 1/4"clearance,if not adjust lower brackets. also that any damage is due to improper installation and is not warrantable. regardless the dealer should stand up and replace the fairing. | ||

If you bought it with fairings installed or they put them on, then they are responsible for fixing them. | ||

Although my bike is not faired, I saw a CR with a fairing --- owned by an employee of my dealer --- that was also beginning to melt from close contact at the header. | ||

Well apparently they forgot some spacers.... I called the original dealer and he has 2 other R's with fairing kits that came with spacers. It seems this dealer forgot them, let the header and fairing contact, it melted and now they are trying to piss me off ......by not owning up to there mistake... Monday we,ll see what they have to say... | ||

I just installed a set of lowers on my R. There was no clearance between the header pipe and fairing. I just bent the lower mounting brackets to give the needed 1/4" clearance. The Velcro setup where the 2 covers meet is pretty cheezy. Jim | ||

2 spacers for each upper mount. 1 spacer for left lower front mount used on 09 model per instructions. Jim | ||

Mine doesn't have any spacers and I doubt my dealer could find them. I just loosened up the lower bolts and bent the brackets to gain the clearance. Retightened the bolts and it fits really nice. However even with 5/16" clearance where the rear pipe protrudes through the fairing the plastic is warping some and melting at the edge. I'm thinking of reshaping it for some more clearance. | ||

I used a 1/4" spacer on the lower right front fairing bracket and this allowed for the bracket to clear the HMF merge pipe and line up to the fairing. I ended up with a scant 5/16" clearance. Found the Heatshield to repair the damaged one on eBay.  Cut the damaged part off  Triple layered the area closest to the header  Unlke the "puffy" stock mat this one will stay away from the pipe. with the bike idling I cannot feel any warmth on the outside of the fairing. The stuff is super sticky and would probably be good for insulating the fuel tank...if I can figure out how to access all of it. | ||

When I installed my fairing initially, I noted the lack of gap and installed my own spacers, and bent both of the engine-mounted brackets (out) until I had a 1/4" gap. My post is on the Board here somewhere, with pics. More importantly: piss-poor design by Buell; no surprise there. Nothing in my instructions telling me not to trust their install bits (!); and it would've been nothing for them to have moulded in a 'power bulge' over the offending exhaust header. It's not like the fairing wasn't intended to fit the Buell, now was it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is Red complaining about Buell again? Yup, as an industrial designer (retired) I certainly am critical of their inadequacies. | ||

Hi guys, just got my fairing kit from Catalyst Composites, for those that have fitted these fairings, did you make any brackets for the bottom section of just rely on the 6 fasteners that hold it to the top section, as mine is currently touching the back of exhaust at the belly pan? anyone else have this issue... if so what did you do? apart from trimming it off and loosing the oil catch function i cant see a way round it? i posted here and as a new topic, sorry but really need an answer as i want to ride ...so bad  thanks in advance Wkd1 | ||

I'm glad to have a set of these lowers as I don't think your going to see to many more. Easy fix, and yeah it would have been nice to just bolt it up and be done. But at least it's obvious what to do and make some spacers. | ||

I editted. I didn't want anyone to think I was a Harley Fag or something  1X2 is what I got. So far the stuff is working out great (put about 300 miles on so far). I made a 1/4" spacer out of a piece of heavy walled aluminum tube and put that between the lower front most bracket.  | ||

It's a cover. Stock outer pod covers stay in place. | ||

The Buell side fairings mount over all the stock bodywork. Nothing is removed save some bolts that are replaced with longer items to mount 2 brackets on either side and longer screws and spacers for one mounting point on each side of the nose fairing. In the picture below you can see the black fairings covering my red side pods:  It makes the bike appear quite wide...  Jeff | ||

I spoke to Buell Techs at local shop about this when I took bike in for weep hole issue. I was told Buell now has new mounting hardware specifically for the melting fairing issues. I should be receiving a new r/s fairing soon. | ||

Still no info on that kit as of yet. I just got my bike back on Saturday for clutch leak. The tech just told me that Buell now has a kit that will give proper clearance to fairing so as to avoid melting it. I should be getting a call as soon as it comes in. He also said that Buell(not his exact words)is known to have hardware in stock but not tell anyone. I will post as soon as I find out. IMO, it's probably a kit that came out recently due to concentration on EBR. maybe new funding=new hardware, who knows?  | ||

Another thing is, and correct me if I'm wrong, but these bikes are fairly new arent they? I mean at least the 1125R/Rotax models. 2008 was the 1125R debut wasnt it? Somewhat of an experimental racebike.....at least thats the way I've always seen them. How long did it take Suzuki,Honda,Yamaha,Ducati to perfect their champion bikes? | ||

Does the fairing scuff up the stock pod covers? I see it comes with a little pad, but if there is any movement it seems like it will scuff the soft plastic of the side covers. | ||

I'm just putting mine one tonight,not really happy with the way the front mounts under the headlights and had to play a little to get some clearance even with the supplied spacer |
