There has to be a first time for everything, and for my dealer Harley Heaven it was their first time to do a 20,000 km service on the 1125r. First they called because the "restrictor" was still fitted, and would I like them to remove it? Turns out they were referring to the 'noid; so I had to explain its true function as a noise pollution device, that it didn't act on the air intake but on the rear throttle body, and that they couldn't just remove it! That is, without the Deutsch resistor to prevent codes, and without tying the rear linkages to avoid inconsistent throttle action. "This they did not know". Then, as for the service, they called at the end of the day (yesterday was Friday here) to advise that, in the time allotted by Harley, they'd managed to get the engine out and the valves checked; now all they had to do was reinstall the engine and could they please have it until next week! They weren't sure if the plugs should be replaced; but as I'd provided them with new plugs and the oil filter, too, they reckoned after all that work they would anyway! Of course we all know that the manual calls for the plugs to be changed; good thing they didn't put the engine back in without!! I reckon Harley's going to get an earful about the time they are allowed to get the job done. The valve lash, by the way, they say was spot-on and required no adjustment. Hats off to Rotax; but if the check is unnecessary, then I am feeling like I am paying for an inspection to make Harley feel good about my warranty status! Cost of the 20,000 km service is about A$800 here, which with the exchange rate now is very similar to the U$. |

I'd be nervous, if they never did a service before or had training they must of had a service manual to rotate the engine, they could not find the chart that displays the need checks for a service and asked you if the plugs should be changed? all of the valves were in spec? i haven't serviced 1 yet but i tend to doubt it, if to the tight side adjust it anyway unless your racing and want every last bit ,a loose valve is a happy valve. just my 2 cents anyone else, Bob |

Everyones got to have their first shot at a valve adjustment on one of these...I'd look at it this way Red.. At least he took it down and checked it. I'm betting that if they needed adjusting, He would have done what was necessary since he was in there and took that much time to take it down. As far as the De-noid recommendation, I might come to the conclusion that the service advisor you were speaking with knows nothing about your bike or anything mechanical for that matter.. things do to get "lost in the sauce" so to speak when relaying info. Maybe the tech never even got the parts you supplied (stranger things have happened) Anyway, Only you will know if your $800.00 was well spent. I hope it is.. |

You are brave sir! I'm more willing to tackle this myself, than to let someone else do it that has never done it. I know there are competent mechanics out there, but I'm sure there are just as many incompetent ones. I just got my service manual, yippeeeee! |

I have a Goldwing with shims and it should be checked every 30K. At 30K mine were in spec, and at 60K they were all still in spec. So I wouldn't be surprised if the Buell was fine at 20K. |

If you have the patience to remove the pods and remove the exhaust along with supporting the bike your good to go .I even reused my valve cover gaskets.Theres really no need to replace them.I just put the plugs in .I was on the tight side at 14k. |

Okee dokee. Let's see here. Dealer's first valve check on a 1125 bike. Yippee. Dealer wanted to remove the 'noid. Gasp. Dealer replaced spark plugs. Hurray. Valves were within spec. Congrats. News flash: The vast majority of us go thru the same crap at the dealer... |

I was kind of wondering if anyone needed valves adjusted at their first check.Seems like 12000 might be a little early.I'm not a mechanic though. |

High Country Buell is doing this service for half off thru January. Sorry, you wouldn't be our first, not even our first in December. If you can get to Colorado, we're always here, open seven days a week. BWB sponsor too. ~jammer |

THE COST OF THE 20,000 KM SERVICE: A$500. THE COST OF 3 EXTRA DAYS' PICKUP RENTAL BECAUSE THE H-D DEALER COULDN'T COMPLETE THE SERVICE IN 1 DAY AS PROMISED: A$200. THE COST OF LEARNING THAT THE H-D DEALER IS NOW SELLING 2009 AND 2010 R MODELS FOR A$12,000 WHEN I PAID A$19,000 (AND THEREBY DESTROYING WHAT LITTLE RESALE VALUE MY BIKE HAD): PRICELESS. |

If you have an issue with that cost, negotiate with your dealer. My dealer offers a service plan, $700US a year, (cheaper with more years) and it includes unlimited services among other things.

Again this is between you and your dealer, mine offers half off HOG rentals when its in for service. In your situation the dealer failed to meet expectations, I would of requested some sort of discount or other compensation.

You just learned about the new pricing? Where have you been for the last 2 months. Also, be sure to talk to HD-DVD player owners about values of products plummeting. The cheap resale value means you can buy like new condition one cheap. How else do you think I am able to afford owning 4 Buell's. |

Don't be a dick, froggy; I don't have a problem with the costs of the service. Don't you recognise the old MasterCard ad format? I DO have a problem with Harley-Davidson doing more than putting Buell out of business: they've actively destroyed the resale value of my bike by paying the dealers to heavily discount the new ones. And where have I been for the past few months? Certainly not wasting my time reading any drivel of yours; but I WAS aware that H-D was discounting the bikes in USA; BUT this is the first I've heard of it in Australia. Stop and think before you post again, mate; you embarrass yourself. And anyone on this Board will tell you I don't tolerate fools well. |

H-D was never the distribution channel suited to the Buell bikes; certainly the two I've used here are cruiser (you all call them choppers) only types. Example: picked up my 09 R yesterday; didn't make any particular fuss about one of the screws being missing from the exhaust header shield. Who knew what it signified? More on that in a moment. But first: by the time I got home my intake temp had reached 64 degrees C; I knew that wasn't wasn't even remotely possible because it wasn't THAT hot outside. Sure enough, the sensor was not only not in its nest, but was trapped betwixt the k-bracket and the left radiator. The bike certainly had begun to misbehave with those inlet measurements! Anyway, back to the missing screw: in the process of retrieving and reinserting the intake sensor (I wasn't taking it back to the dealer!) I discovered that the reason the one screw was missing from the header shield -- was because BOTH were missing when they completed the service: they'd used the speed clip from the frame, which held the solenoid bracket in place, to now hold the header shield in place. To make up for that, they'd loosely zip-tied the bracket to the frame; which of course meant the bracket was not holding the airbox properly. And to top it off, they'd completely removed the cable linkage from the solenoid and tossed it! This despite my having refused their offer (see my original posting here) to remove the "restrictor", as they called it. Fortunately I had a new Bosch resistor plug on hand, and simply finished the job for them by removing the 'noid, plugging the resistor into the pigtail, and screwing the 'noid bracket back into its rightful place. The 'noid was still in place because it had never given my trouble, and I didn't want to interfere with my warranty coverage. Am I complaining? You're damned right I am. |

I wasn't being a dick, I was offering possible solutions. But odds are your dealer is less than willing to work with you if you treat them the same way you treat me. Jeeze. Look, it isn't my fault you didn't find out till now about the discount programs. I found out about the Australian specific ones including the fairing kit promo shortly after they went into affect. Not only was it visible on here with several threads made, there was talk of it on several motorcycle and even some non-motorcycle boards I frequent. The fairing kit even got magazine advertising. I am a Buell enthusiast, so I try and stay on top of the latest news. A common person not so much. Still, you aren't exactly a stranger around these parts, so it did surprise me that you did not know. As for embarrassing myself, I fail to see where I have done that on this thread (But I got plenty of embarrassing threads elsewhere on the board! )
quote:H-D was never the distribution channel suited to the Buell bikes;
I agree with you there. HD had a fantastic opportunity to amazing things with the Buell line and bring in many new customers into their dealers. They failed miserably.
quote:Am I complaining? You're damned right I am.
I very well would be too if my dealer has made mistakes like that. Humans aren't perfect, and when my dealer has screwed something up, they have gone out of the way to not just fix it but make it better if possible. With the number of issues you have had with your dealer, it makes me wonder if they are just incompetent, or if they just don't want your business. |

Froggy, that's about what I paid,$500. Decided to let the dealer do it. Mine had 3 valves that needed shimming. Also, the dealer (Mancuso Crossroads) kindly fixed the knocking in the front end and flashed the ecu. Everything done correctly, now my baby is faster (and quieter) now than it's ever been. HOORAY! For what it's worth, whether you do it yourself or let your dealer do it, the first valve inspection is pretty important, I think. |

FWIW, mine were in spec, one of the cams wasn't. Button it up and call the "crash truck" to come get Loretta. Buell warranty rocks. I rotate the engine the second time in 850 miles. Red, hold your water, once the subsidized new bikes run out, the price will come back up to realistic points. Supply and DEMAND. |

Yup, froggy, if my dealer went off on me the way you did -- that is, with brain disengaged -- then I'd have treated him the same way. Next time think before you post, or you'll get more of the same. As it is, my dealer was quite nice and I was quite nice back -- and he screwed up my bike BIG time as a thank-you. Don't comment on things you know nothing about, like my good mate Fresno does: And Fresno, we're old sparring partners. I'm coming to California next year, give me your address and we'll see how you go with me up-close-and-personal. I'm told I'm crazy, that I have a death wish -- and I don't always remember to take my medication. Do you feel lucky, punk? |

There you go again, insulting me. Seriously, when did I insult you. Knock it off already. It clearly states in the badweb rules "I agree to treat with respect and courtesy all members of this online Buell enthusiasts' community. I realize that there is never any justification to violate this policy, and that if I do, I may forfeit my BadWeB posting privileges." You haven't said anything ban-worthy in my opinion, but it sure doesn't make you look good. The funny thing is, I *was* thinking when I made those posts. You are right again, as I can only comment on what I see, and all I see is your side of the story. Every time I have seen someone with a story like yours, the dealers story is totally different, and the customer conveniently leaves out facts, stretches the truth, or flat out lies. Was that the case here? We will never know. I have read posts in the past when someone drained the transmission fluid on a XB, then instead of refilling it, put a quart more oil in the oil tank, not the transmission. A hundred miles later, transmission locks up. Needless to say, Buell wouldn't warranty cover his screwup, and he posted ranting on here saying nasty things about the dealer, the MoCo, and several high ranking Buell employees. Am I saying thats the case here? No. My point is, if your dealer is really screwing up this badly and this often, you are bringing it upon yourself if you just keep going there and not addressing the issue. I would of either told them to figure out what the hell they are doing, or I would take my business elsewhere. Then again, this logic requires having a brain engaged and using common sense, as obviously ranting online to people 12 timezones away isn't going help. |
