Sounds like a pretty interesting trip to me. What will you be ridding? I did something similar back in 98 (no Old Mexico however). Best thing I've ever done to date ... 10,500 miles ... about 3 months and on my S3T. If you need any "tips" on where to stay, what to pack, or sites to not miss, let me know.

Cheers,

Jim,

I'm riding my Cyclone and going with a friend on an SV650. Sounds like you had a nice long, leisurely trip. It would be incredible to take a 3 month ride. I can't swing something like that with the job I have. We're going to do it in about 2 weeks. Details haven't been planned yet. I certainly would appreciate any "tips" that you have to offer.

Thanks . . . Chris

Chris,

BTW, have you ever made the run on Route 191 (was called 666 years ago, Devils Highway) from Safford to Alpine Arizona? Most know nothing about it and I like to call it Arizona’s version of the Dragon Slayer. It’s like 90 miles of hair-raising hairpins, switch-backs, long sweepers and twisties. To my knowledge the BRAG October Torque-fest is going to make that run. If so, without a doubt, there’s going to be a ton of bikes going down.

For starters I'd purchase something like Delorme software to plan your trip and get a GPS if you can afford it. Plus you'll have to get used to using the software. I was totally amazed what's available within the software itself (any routing you can think of, campgrounds with or without facilities, motels, rates, road construction and so forth).

Are you planning on camping most of the time? If so I have a butt-load of tips for you in that area. If you plan on hitting numerous National Parks, I’d suggest purchasing a National Park Pass (probably 50 bucks now). If you belong to the AMA, they offer discounts too to motels. It sounds like you’re planning an Iron-Butt ride to me. I’d suggest picking some key areas you really want to see and plan around that. Keep in mind you can run into some really nasty weather too. I could tell you a few stories you wouldn’t believe.

You can spend a week in Colorado in a heartbeat and only see a fraction of what’s available (and many other states of course). I ended up staying in the Washington area 7 days instead of my planned 3 days. Mount Rainier Park and the Olympic National Park blew me away. Glacier Nation Park in Wyoming was another totally awesome site to see, not to mention Banff Canada. It goes on and on. I was totally blow away.

I averaged about 350 to 400 miles a day when I was riding and it was all I could physically take for that extended period of time (meaning 3 months). I did have a 900-mile day too and I was totally spent (to say the least). I always got up early and road to dawn. I rarely got on an interstate except for something special I wanted to see, like the Eisenhower tunnel in Colorado or I was on long stretches like in Wyoming (I-25 or I-80). Since I calculated everything it was hard to “average” anything over 60 mph, or 350'ish miles a day, simply because I was always stopping or slowing down to see something that blew my mind. I did a ton of backtracking and circles everywhere because I had the time. Just for example, in Wyoming I hit all 4 entrances and exists to Yellowstone, went south to camp in the Tetons then east to the Rockies.

csg,
Did you have any luck finding out if the brag group is still at Chosa's? Or was that letter sent by a ghost.

Jim,

Thanks for the post (I thought I responded, damn I get distracted sometimes . . . sorry about that).

I haven't ridden route 191 in eastern AZ. I have seen it on a map and was actually planning to hit it on an overnight loop ride 1 weekend this summer. Looks like lots of fun.

We are planning a sort of ironbutt ride, but now you have me thinking about less quantity and more quality. I did a trip last summer and averaged about 4-500 miles a day. Really enjoyed myself but would have liked to have had more time to enjoy the sites.

I know all about that tricky summer weather in the Rockies. Went over Beartooth pass in June with about 15' of snow piled on either side of the road and a nasty storm that had me riding thru heavy rain for 8 straight hours.

I'm not sure if we're going to camp or use hotels (I suspect we'll use hotels). When our plans get a little more firm, I'll post our route and will look forward to any suggestions you may have.

Thanks . . . Chris

Hey Ghost sure was nice meeting you and your sidekick. I still think he should have turned the cardboard box back in on the Low 9S. It looked pretty good on him. Do they still have that turn your blast in for full price trade in deal?

Anyway Yes I continued on the Chosa's and was told Cary must have signed the letter before he left. I asked when did he leave? They said just a little while ago. What a crock...I believe he left at the beginning of December last year. So it must have been his Ghost that signed the letter a day after I got it and two days after it was postmarked. LOL

They believe they still have a BRAG chapter called East Valley Sportbike Club but they said they are looking for some officers. I said I was under the impression that they had not renewed with national for this year. They said Oh we still have time. I asked how many members they had. They said about 18 to 20. I said well if you don't have any officers how well attended are the meetings if there are any? They said we have the meetings first saturday of every month. So since I had just missed this months meeting I guess I will have to just show up next month and find out what gives.

Hi, I'm a new Bueller. Just got a Blast in January. Talked the wife into letting me upgrade to the XB9S next year. Can't wait. Anyway. I'm in the Marines and I'm stationed down here in Yuma. Boring. From what I've seen I have to ride two to three hours in any direction to find someplace decent to ride at all. I saw the info about the BRAG club and I'm just as curious if they will be hosting any events. I was interested in attending. Like I said, it's boring here in Yuma.

Hey Csg, That is hilarious...he signed it before he left. Well I guess the saga continues. Well keep me informed on what happens when you go to the meeting. It sounds like we might have to start our own Brag group.

Southernmarine welcome to the wonderful world of buell.

Greetings,

For those unaware, Arizona has its’ own Dragon Slayer on US 191 called the Coronado Trail (AKA … US 666, Dead Mans Highway). For the most dramatic impact you should start in Springerville and end in Morenci Arizona (about a 6 hour butt clinching ride). With elevations reaching 9,000 ft., outrageously treacherous twisties, miles of switchbacks, this 120 mile scenic byway will tame the most fearless hooligan in a hear-beat. I've ridden this many times over the years.

Anyway, if you navigate to this link route 666 (or 191) is in red. Once there click the green North arrow at the top/middle of the map and see how extensive US 666 is. It will take you several clicks to view the entire adventure. Surely the Southwest BRAG event in October won’t be hitting this treacherous run?
