I've done some searching and I *think* I have the answer but I want to make sure... Had the muffler off for a primary oil service and I noticed that something inside of reasonable heft seems to slide back and forth. It also rattles a little when I bang on it with my hand. I can't hear anything while riding. From what I've read, it seems people either thing that this means something broke inside, or it's just ready for a repack. Thoughts? Sounds like the baffle tube fell off of the endcap. I wouldn't ride with it till you've had it apart and looked it over. There are horror stories of guys that were thrown off their bikes from running over their own mufflers. I suggest you take it off anf give it very thorough going over. |

It sounds like it needs re-packed.Mine is loose, not re-packing until the muff is too LOUD. |

Ditto Bluesboy. The insulation is piss-poor to begin with. Likely you will find it gone when you open it. The perf tube is free to rattle around on the end caps, hence the noise. I got my repack kit from Al at American Sport Bike. I did a write-up in the KV some time ago, but if you can't find it, PM me and I'll post it again. Also, if you decide you don't want to repack too often...use steel wool instead of fiberglass packing. |

I ordered the kit from Al - how long should this stuff last? I just got the bike, has almost 12kmi on it and I wouldn't be surprised if its never been done before on it. |

When you hear it rattle it means that it needs to be repacked. Factory pack lasts maybe 3000 miles. Aftermarket will last about 10000 - YMMV. You will NEED a hardened drill bit (like cobalt) to drill through the Stainless rivets. A drill press is handy too. I remove the exhaust side only. Replace the rivets with aluminum ones and you won't have to worry about it again. Rivets are available at any hardware store (and don't forget the rivet tool!) I get my packing from the local motocross shop - FMF and Moose brands have outlasted every other brand. WARNING - after a repack start your bike OUTSIDE or you'll get fiber snow in your garage... Good luck - if you can roll a sleeping bag you can do this job. |

Al's kit comes with a bit and rivits, so I'm covered there. The packing looks to be preformed - pretty much just slide it in? Also says it's some kind of continuous strand ceramic-based something or other... or maybe that's just the loose stuff, not sure. We'll see how long this stuff goes for. Doesn't sound like I real hard job. |

Butch - I have spot welds on the inlet (9, 12 and 3 o'clock), but I don't see any on the outlet. My front mount looks like the race item - has the "shoe" : http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/17095.html The hangar itself looks like the updated "Y" part. |
