I had no idea that the HIDs actually ran cooler than halogens. Good to know. I'm going to upgrade both the high and low beams. If the high beam doesn't work to my liking, I'll just throw a Silverstar Ultra in there instead. I was thinking there would be a significant reduction in lighting when switching from an HID low beam to a halogen high beam (I couldn't imagine how there wouldn't be). Thanks for confirming this, Froggy. |

Hey Froggy, I have a couple of follow-on questions regarding using an HID for a high beam...
quote:When the unit is warm, it can be flashed instantly.
When does the unit warm up? When the ignition is turned on? Or when the bulb is first used (i.e. when the high beam switch is flipped on)? If it's the latter, how long does it stay "warmed up"? (Message edited by a_s_r on November 20, 2009) |

Hey Sl33py, just curious, how much heat these HID kits generate compared to the standard halogen bulb? I ordered the DDM kit, and I'm hoping not to encounter any heat-related issues within the CR headlight housing. Also, do these things really take enough time to come to full brightness to warrant sticking with a halogen for the high beam? The last thing I want is to flip a switch looking for additional lighting and momentarily get less. In theory I would prefer HID for both high and low beams, but it sounds like that may not be the best option in practice. Hey Dwiggs - sorry i missed a lot of this yesterday eve and this am. I wouldn't do the HID's (35 or 55w) in the high beams. The lows are PLENTY bright enough, and i actually now use the flash to pass during the day, where before i rode w/ highs on. There is a couple second delay for them to get up to full output. I'll dig out the vid camera and try to show you guys this weekend. Like several have said - down a country road the hi would be awesome, but a quick flash probably won't work. And that's with the slim ballast (digital) which is faster than the older big ballasts. And they run cooler than equivalent bulbs, so no issue so far w/ the 55w kit in mine. The 35w ballast is a bit smaller in dimensions which, if space is tight, you may consider - especially on a CR. I still need to clean up some extra wiring to snug things up a bit. I had reverse polarity issues so had to flip the one connector to get them to power on. It's on DDM's site - but i also didn't need to get the accessory power and ran them from stock power. Nice! And a bit of digging found that an h8 35w puts out about 730 Lumens. Now they put out 5000 Lumens (x2!) |

When the bulb is turned on. As for how fast it cools off, I am not really sure, but it dosen't take long. After a few minutes of being off it will be dim again till it warms back up. Lime, I attempted to do a search for you, but the board is currently locked. I will get it later. |

quote:Froggy, I just ordered a single kit. I know it's on there. If you give me a link to the install instructions, I'll get you a link to the single kit. ; )
The instructions are a joke - not very helpful. I followed Puzzled's thread on his HID install from Sporttwin Forums My 55w kit(s) needed the reverse polarity trick to work.
quote:My HID kit does not turn on (reverse polarity) Author: DDM Tuning Created On: 16 Oct 2009 11:36 PM If you install your HID kit and they do not turn on you may have reverse polarity. What this means is the power and ground wires are your vehicles stock harness are reversed. What you will have to do is plug the harness connector into the ballast backwards. You will be plugging in the connector from your car into the kit backwards. This will not harm the vehicle or the kit.

Bad news, the low beam and high beam have different bulb holders, and the stock one won't work with the high beam. Going to have to cut something up for this... |

I am looking at a HID slim ballast kit but where would you put the ballast on a CR. Any suggestions? |

Can you secure it in some way so it doesn't move while the front wheel touches the sky? |

3000k is yellow, the brightest color is 4300k, thats the same as what HID's on cars use. As for securing it, I am sure you can zip tie it or something. I just stuffed it in between the wires. I am still working on the high beam, I am going to steal the 9006 size bulb out of my car and see if it fits. |

I am going to buy the DDM single kit but is there some way to replace the high beam with a brighter bulb. I am also thinking of putting a yellow bulb in for the high beam. |

Yea while I had the assembly open I threw in a Silverstar bulb on the high beam, it was just sitting on my shelf doing nothing. |

Great thread; very helpful tidbit about the polarity! Vosnick52: Yes, I installed the DDM-tuning 55W 6000K kit and it works fine. Very bright! This is an immensely helpful thread for those of us who are more visual... http://www.sporttwin.com/index.php?/topic/19311-in stalling-hids-on-an-1125r/ |
