Whats the handling difference between the 3?. My X1 currently has a 190mm tire on cast wheels,it was on there when i got it. Way too much tyre for a 5" rim. I know it should have a 170 as stock, when i dropped from the factory size 190 to 180 on my R1 it quickened up the steering quite abit, had to relearn the cornering of it. I take it the 190 would slow down the X1's steering, I'm pretty happy with its handling, it doesn't really need to be any quicker steering. Has any one played with tyre sizes..does it make a big difference?. |

When I changed the factory Dunlop 170s to my 180 Pirellis I noticed a big difference in handling... it got better (probably has to do with the better tires though.) Anyways, I think I will go back to stock size next time with pirellis and hope to see an increase in performance. I have the cast wheels too and I agree; 190 is way too big. |

I ran the 180 on my M2 and then went back to the 170. It turns much better with the 170. I can't imagine a 190??? |

If you have cast wheels then do the 170, PMs run the 180 without ill effects. You can do a 180 on the cast but it will slow it a bit. 190 is too big. Think about what you're doing to the weight of the drive wheel with that heavier tire. I want less rolling mass, not more. Bigger isn't better in this case. http://www.mad-ducati.com/Articles/TireWidth.html If your chicken strips are more than an inch...Go to a 200 for that big tire look, you don't turn it anyway. |

Is a 170 the factory size for the PM wheels even though they're a 5.5" rim? |

I run the PM Wheels and my bike came with a 170 from the factory. |

I only run 180s on my PM wheels because race scrubs are easy to find. 170, not so much. Mine came with a 170 and handled great the time I put a 160 scrub on it. |

Nallac- How does the 190 tire fit with the belt? is there enough room? I am planning on running a 190 on my X1 if I switch over to XB wheels.... then i plan on maybe widening the wheel and running a 210. I was planning on a chain conversion for the 210, but was iffy if the 190 would fit with the belt. thanks |

What advantage do you see in running a 210, or for that matter, a 190? |

Depends what type and style of riding you're doing, and where, to gauge 180 or 190. I wouldn't run a 170 on a 5.5 rim. I wouldn't run one on an X1 with a 5 inch rim either. Over the years I've tried several tyres and found I like the 180/55 x 17 Pirelli soft compounds. Rocket |

the advantage i see in running a 210 is looks.... I love a big fat tire outback. I plan on having the stock xb widened to 6" or so. |

I know its way to big,i can't get rid of the chicken strips cause they're where the sidewall should be, thats unless i throw the bike down the road. I will try something smaller when due a new tyre. The strange thing is i like the way it turns in not to fast not to slow just right. Purpony, theres about 4-5mm clearance between tyre(Pilot road 2)and belt. Bear in mind different Tire Brands can be slightly wider or narrower altho be the "same" size. Theres another X1 running a 190 on Pm's locally, not sure of the clearance with them. |

"I wouldn't run a 170 on a 5.5 rim. I wouldn't run one on an X1 with a 5 inch rim either." And why? I agree the wider tire looks better from behind but the narrower tire has a much crisper turn in. YMMV. |

As I understand it: Bigger tires slow down turn-in, are heavier, are more likely to hydroplane, and, to some riders, look better. Smaller tires speed up turn-in, are lighter, are less likely to hydroplane, and to me, look better. All sizes of tire perform best on the recommended rim size. Based on that, when the time comes to replace tires I plan to use Avon Azaro Pro-Xtreme Rain tires. They are not available in a 170 size but only in 160 and 180. The recommended rim size for the 160 is 4.5" to 5". The recommended rim size for the 180 is 5.5" to 6". Right now, I think the 160 would be the best choice for my cast 5" rim. |

recommended sizes are 170 for the cast wheels and 180 for PMs. Run whatever size tires you want, this topic is like asking about engine oil.. everyone has a different opinion and we're all 100% sure that you'll crash and die if you use the wrong size tires. Just please don't put 170 tires on a PM wheel My 02 X1 is currently in that configuration just because that's how I bought the wheels and was too lazy to put the proper tire on the wheel. The treaded area is so flat from being stretched onto a wide wheel that I run out of lean angle REALLY fast. It doesn't take anything more than a spirited freeway exit to cover the "chicken strip" area and run out of tire. I've run 170 and 180 tires on the cast wheels and like the feel of both for different reasons. The 170 turns in quicker but doesn't feel as stable. The 180 on cast wheels honestly felt more natural, like that's how the bike should feel, but required a decent amount of effort to get the bike to "lay down" into a corner. |
