My two shortest rides aren't really mine, but my brother Jerry's on my equipment. Age 13 (he was around 16)... I just got a brand new Velo Solex moped. He made it 50 yards down the street before he turned into a lamp post and dented the tank! (Which, if you're not familiar with these "exotic" machines, is over the front wheel). The tank had to be replaced. When I was 16 (or 17, don't remember!), having not learned my lesson, I let him ride my brand new Bultaco Metralla. For those of you not familiar with *this* exotic machine, it was a 200cc single cylinder two-stroke and weighed in at 212 lbs! *VERY* fussy! *VERY* touchy! He let out the clutch too quickly and promptly landed on his back! Luckily, there was no damage to either party! What's funny is that he wasn't totally inexperienced. He owned a 305 SuperHawk, a Vespa (with three speed on the grip), and some other machines as well. He hasn't ridden my Buell. I've finally learned my lesson! Steve |

The shortest ride I witnessed was watching a very green friend get on her brand new Blast (which was parked perpendicular to the driveway) for the first time, throttle it, muck up the left hand action, and run into the gate. Bike and rider down. Less than 10 feet. |

Well, okay, against my better judgement and all as it's not really moto related but here goes... I grew up next door to a family named Laubinger and their son Dwayne is six months older than me...We have been real close friends forever...Dwayne is a CPA living in KC and he and his mother, who even my kids call Grandma Ruby, lost their father about 10 years ago...Ruby and her husband Bud were still living in the city of St Louis at the time and like a lot of cities the area where she lived was not what it once was...So Ruby decides, at the age of 71 to refurbish the old log cabin on the family farm and add on to it and sell her house in the city and move to the country...Well the remodeling of the farm house takes on a life of it's own but when finished it's unbelievable...The original cabin is what you see when you drive up the loooong gavel lane but there has been added a modern four bedroom house on the back side with siding and a metal roof, even, to match the cabin...All tile floors and all in all, a great country home... John (V2WIN) at this time had a old jeep that had been turned into a kinda swamp buggy thingy with these huge tires that made it sit about twenty feet off the ground (okay maybe not quite)...So one evening he and I decide to drive out to Grandma Ruby's to see the house and farm...Gerald MO is probably about 90 miles from us so it takes a while to get there and then we let Ruby show us around her new pride and Joy and, most importantly, feed us...You NEVER go to Grandma Ruby's without being fed lots of homemade goodies...Her applebutter and bread are to die for... So we finally leave about 11:00 p.m. for the return trip and it's pitch dark with no moon whatsoever...We drive down the lane and turn north on the county road and about a mile down the road we're rounding a right hand turn and there are pigs all over the road...Of course John picks out the biggest sow of the crowd and plows into and over it while breaking...We've now stopped and can hear Ms Piggy dying under the jeep (sorry for the faint of heart)...I get out and direct John to back up and he pulls onto the shoulder...By now the pig is real dead so we grab the hind feet and pull her off the roadway onto the shoulder...No sign now of the other pigs...They have all disappeared and we look around and see no farm lights indicating where these damn pigs came from and have now gone to...Se we break up and John goes back the way we came and I walk up the road, both of us searching for the pig farmer...No luck...I don't know how far John went but I'm sure I walked 1/2 mile, at least...And to top if all off, during all this, not one car or pickup passes us that we could flag down and ask info of...So we say "What the hell?" and leave...I know, I know, everyone wants to know why we didn't take the dead pig and butcher it?...Well we thought of that but it wasn't our pig so maybe the mystery farmer would eventually find it and be able to use it...So we drive the 90 miles and two counties back home and get home really late... At 7:30 the next morning my phone rings waking up Shirley and I and it's John...He says, "You won't believe this but a deputy just knocked on his door and issued him a $150 citation for killing a farm yard animal and not informing the farmer...He's right, I didn't believe him but it was true and he wanted my brother-in-law (an attorney) to see if he could do something... And that is the famous pig story!... See Ya! Bob |

To take my bike with us to fetch things on the race course was welcomed by the trainer. After loading the horses, separated from each other by wooden boards, there was not too much space left. Hurry up time now. I thought my good old 250 cc 4 stroker BSA with side valves would do best making the ramp less steep by traversing from right to left. Could do it more calmly then because brakes were rudimentary and it seemed me necessary to stop at the top. Well, almost perfect: The bike started to tip over with the frontwheel well on the flat and the rear still on the ramp. There was only one thing missing: foothold for left foot.... Well, all had been entangled and was still functional but since I have big respect for ramps. Hans |

My shortest ride was on a three wheeler as a passenger. I was about 12 and my cousin was gonna take me for a little ride. He had the three wheeler pointed at an angle to the house, about 5 feet away. I hopped on and asked him to wait a minute, wasn't ready. He tried to show off, he gunned it and ran us ride up the side of the house. My lesson learned was that a three wheeler will climb the side of the house when attempting to do so at an angle, end results, if you keep your balance, you just might bring it back down without flipping, we were lucky to do so, also missed the bedroom window by about a foot. |

My girlfriend (Heather) was using my old Yamaha 600 to learn on. One of her friends came out to visit and we all decided to go for a ride. Me on my Buell with her friend and Heather on the 600. Heather was really pretty new to riding and was doing well so she was feeling pretty good. Her friend was kinda pissing in her Cheerios saying what's so hard about it. So we find a parking lot and let her give it a try. Bike begins to roll about 2 feet when the slow tip to the right begins. Grand total - ~5 feet (clutch not even completely engaged). My shortest ride was when I was about 12 years old. Suzuki RM60 about to race one of the neighbor kids on his four wheeler. Revving the motor waiting for another kid to start us when clutch cable snaps (who says frayed and rusty won't hold together?). Total distance - bike, ~15-20 feet; me - nowhere (except face down in the dirt). (Message edited by uwgriz on May 01, 2003) |
