I am looking into getting a leftover 09 this weekend. I have a Buell Race Can and K&N filter that I would like to install once I take delivery. First off, is this a good idea to do right away or should I wait a bit? Also If I install this without modding the ECM will I run into any performance issues? I am sure someone has done this, but I wanted to know how it runs or what steps I need to take in order for the components to work properly and/or how long I should wait until installing. Please provide me with some answers and insight. Thanks in advance. -Brian |

Keep in mind, new bikes run hot, and lean bikes run hot. If you add the filter and muffler, you're bike will be running quite lean. Why not save the K&N until you need to replace the OEM. |

I was advised by two of the major Buell exhaust can builders that it was perfectly fine to add a race exhaust to a 09 with no further mods. One also added not to install a aftermarket air filter along with the can if using the stock ecm. Im leaning towards a Spec.Ops pipe for my stock 09 xb12. |

Can you do it? Sure. Should you do it? No. You already spent some money on a can and filter, spend a little more and make it work right. |

I've been getting conflicting stories on this... I've heard it both ways, some say that the ecm on the '09's will compensate on it's own, some say it'll need to be tuned to run properly. I put a k&n filter in my '09 Ss the day I got it with 6 miles on it. Then 2.5k miles later (2 or 3 weeks ago) I put a borrowed d&d on it...all with the stock ecm. So far so good...everything is running great and I've had no problems. I haven't pulled the plugs to see if it looks like it's running rich or lean, but may do that in the future... |

It'll be fine, do it. Filter or not. |

Its easier said than done to get it tuned. I've only heard of one shop that is able to tune the 08+'s, and that's in Cali. My dealer is one of the best in the country and then don't even do it. |

Directlink software will do the job, any shop thats familiar with Directlink on a DDFI2 Buell would have no problem doing a newer bike. |

The motor will be perfectly fine with the can and the filter in it without tuning. There may be areas that aren't quite optimum, so drivability may be affected but you aren't going to damage the motor. It is a gross simplification to say that the the motor is going to run lean without tuning. Best thing to do is try it and see if the drivability is adversely affected and then decide from there. Also, if you are putting the exhaust and filter in as actual performance upgrades, you are leaving a lot on the table by not having the motor properly tuned. |

I put just the can on my brand new 09 Uly with only 37 miles on it and it did stumble a little bit off of throttle, did a TPS reset and it was fine. Just about everyone on here has had differant experiences Joe will tell you one thing Fred another and Frank will tell you they are both F'ed up. (Not real people just example names) Best thing to do is ask and then try, most on here will help you anyway they can, others well lets just say are smartasses who think they know everything and give some good and some bad advice. Many posts on here in someones profile does not all ways mean they give good advice. Sometimes they do not have anything better to do. Good luck with putting your filter and pipe on and let us know how it turns out. Jimmy |

Are the ECMs on the 08 and 09s the same? |

I have an 09 XB12Scg and I have been very confused about this ECM tuning situation. I have had two Harley's before this Buell with a pipe and high flow air filter and both had to be re tuned because of lean conditions. My plan is to get the drummer and the k&n at the 1000 service. I have asked my dealer along with Gainesville HD and both said they can tune the bike but when I asked about direct link and specifics they were clueless. I then called kevin at drummer and he explained that no remapping is neccessary with the drummer and that they are actually running a stock ECM on their race bike. So am back to square one... Even with Kevin's advice, I still would like to get the bike properly tuned so that I will avoid the dreaded decel pop with the lean AFR, but I am at a loss to find a "good" dyno tuner that knows about the later model Buells. |

Have you tried American Sport Bike? They sell the Direct Link system and pretty sure tune bikes so they may be a good place to ask and then buy the software and hardware for the tuning. |

Greg_e, I actually spoke to Al at American Sport Bike and I am waiting to hear back from him. I don't mind buying the direct link key but need to find a tuner in my area that knows how to use it. I don't know much about tuning and don't want to risk my engine while I learn how to use it. I would rather leave it to the pro's and just ride |

Swirvn, I'm in the same boat. Been waiting for two years now to find somebody that can tune my 08. Don't understand why BMC got the bright idea to make these ECM's such a bitch to tune!!! (Message edited by boney95 on November 19, 2009) |
