Nothing to prevent it, just repairs to fix it (warranty). Roysbuell... I wouldn't be super concerned. How hard did you break your bike in? If you broke it in more on the hard side I'd switch to Syn3 or full syn (whatever you prefer, I used various full syn's before the rebuild, now I use syn3, don't notice much difference). If you were really light on the bike I'd atleast run Syn3, if not, run dyno for another 1000-1500 miles then switch to a semi or full synthetic. If your bike still burns a lot after switching then just keep an eye on it. I wouldnt bring it in to the shop until you get closer to 4,000 miles on it. I was told it can take that long to get fully broken in. My bike however burned around a quart per 1000 miles all the way to 7,000 miles. After the repairs I hit the track at 8,000 miles after switching to syn3 and didn't burn a drop. Also make sure you are not filling it to much. I would aim for 1/3-1/2 of the notched part on the dip stick covered. Any higher and you could be sucking it into your airbox, not really burning it. |

This is the break-in I performed. Kept it under 3k for the first 50 miles, vary rpm's in all gears for first 100, under 5k for the first 1000. Once warm I treated 5k as the redline. |

Ever go WOT to 5,000rpm? If it were my bike I would change the oil and put more dino in there. You have already done 95 percent of the break in (90 percent of it is within 100 miles, then it takes a lot longer for the last 10 percent)... But I would run the bike much harder, don't be afraid of 6,500, even 7,000rpm and get on the gas harder. Do that for a 1000 miles or so then switch to synthetic or syn3... Make sure that thing is broken in! |

Yes, I have WOT to 5k and a rare occasion have passed it by maybe 500 rpm's. |

Burning a QT of oil in 1k miles is WAY too much. That is not normal! My 08 has just over 6k on the clock, and I've burned less than a 1/4 QT total. |

Most of the time people think they are burning oil, they aren't. They are over filling it and its ending up in the airbox. If the stick is wet, your good. |

My "new" 2004 XB12s has 9500 miles on it...I have put 1400 miles on it since I got it...it has used no measurable amount of oil. |

Froggy, what oil and filter does Dr.Greg use? And what's the schedule like... oil change every 3K miles? 2K miles? I was told that it's likely pieces of the valve guide were circulating thru the engine and caused the "high mileage" wearing. If so then the Buell's oil filter didn't work well enough, or was it? This would depend on whether Dr.Greg uses the same thing... It's about 5 miles each way to work for me so maybe I should change the oil sooner than 3K miles? Say 2K miles? And with this oil filter? http://www.scottsonline.com/products.php?PartType= 3 Christopher |
