Oh, FYI, I also lay into it hard on takeoff, unless I'm in town. The long distance commuting is where I make up the mpg.

My 09 XB9SX gets a painfully consistent 40mpg with 3k miles. My Katana 750 got about 40mpg, my sv650 got about 60mpg. Of course my blast was easily 70mpg.
I was expecting better from the larger displacement/lower rpms of the buell v-twin. Website figures are a downer  . I hate the 125 mi yellow light of fun stoppage. This is my only major complaint of the xb9. |

This got me thinking if it would be possible to make some sort of external tank. Like the tanks on fighter jets that they can drop except these you wouldn't drop. Something like the Uly's luggage or those hard bags you can get for lightnings. It'd definitely weigh the bike down so there would have to be suspension work done. |

The XB9's have a shorter stroke and shorter gearing, both will contribute negatively to fuel economy.
Several Uly riders have a Tour Tank mounted on the back. http://www.tourtank.com/
You would be looking at a worst case scenario of 50 more lbs for the tank + 3 gallons of gas, suspension rework shouldn't be needed. |

My '09 XB12Ss gets an average of 38-40 mpg and there are 5,000 miles on the clock. I too was hoping for better. I'll see about getting an ECU re-flash in the spring.
My old Ninja 500 got an average of 54 mpg. I know it has a lot smaller engine, but it has carburetors. I was really hoping that this bike would be comparable to my Ninja in fuel economy. |

Your old ninja probably had full fairings, and it also has less than half the displacement. 54mpg is low for a Ninja 500, also the same with your XB. |

On my '03 9S I get 50-54 mpg on highway. If I'm riding to and from work (15 miles round trip) I get 38-40 but that's because of my long warm-ups in the morning. I cruse in the 3200 to 4500 rpm range BTW. |

Actually Froggy, I meant more like the hard side bags, I cant remember who makes them, but have those for tanks. I'd just make sure both were filled equally and would empty at the same rate so it wouldn't throw the bikes balance all out of whack. |
