I have an 05 XB12R that I would like to have the rims powdercoated black instead of the stock gold. I know a guy that has had it done before, and I was wondering what I need to do as far as taking out the wheel bearings etc before i turn it in to the powdercoaters and if there is anything special I need to do as far as trimming out the powdercoating when I get it back. Any info would be apreciated. | ||

Don't count on trimming, have the tapped holes, bare surfaces, etc. masked before coating. There was a recent thread that addressed cold pulling the bearings vs. heat gun to pull and install. | ||

+1 on the above! Make sure you get all the areas that the bearings and brake rotor parts taped off because it is a real pain to get that stuff off without scoring the aluminum. Trust me I know. Luckily the powdercoater did seal the holes for the brake rotor bolts, but left the area uncovered that the square spacers go and that is what caused me the most headache. Otherwise mine turned out great and were a cheaper way to get black that buying new wheels from Buell. | ||

Thanks for the Plug Chippy but I'm not a sponsor so I wont chime in and take away from Pete. But to answer the question, pull the bearings and send them out, figure on them being media blasted (most charge a bit extra for this if real dirty). If you have to trim or sand any coating off you went to the wrong guy, speak with whomever is doing the work and check their work before hand. | ||
