did you loosen the pinch bolt? im not being an ass, just asking. It is located on the belt side under the swingarm below the axle. (Message edited by ustorque on November 12, 2009) |

I did. That was the easy one. OK... lets go for the basics. Do I loosen it clokwise or counterlockwise? I just got my drummer ... heck! I can't wait anylonger. I need to install it. |

Be careful. Some owners have twisted axles that were seized. |

Why do you need to loosen the rear axle to install a new pipe?? |

One other thing to watch out for, if the axle has never been out before. It's very likely that it is corroded on the threaded end and will not happily pass past the left side wheel bearing. So, spray some penetrating oil on the left wheel bearing. If you have a hot air gun warm the axle/swing arm, being careful no to damage the bearing seal. When you get the axle broke loose, wind it a couple of turns then check to see if there is a gap developing between the left wheel bearing and the swing arm. If there is a gap, stop loosening the axle there. Apply more penetrating oil and heat. Wind the axle back in then try loosening again. Repeat until the axle loosens without a gap showing... the rest should go smoothly. |

Thanks. I'll look again into it tomorrow. I need to loosen the axle to remove the belt tensioner and then gain access to the muffler rear straps. |

I took my pipe off without removing the tensioner. I just used an extension. When I put the Drummer on, I reversed the straps for easier access in the future. |

And when you reinstall the mufler clamps, just reverse them. The clamp bolts will be visible on the left side of the bike, but much easier to get on and off!! |

Didn't look like they would fit from the left side, I have mine under the muffler right now, need to put them up on top from the left and see what happens. |

.................................................. .......................................... they should end up looking like this, no need to loosen the axle... but it sound like you may want to start working on it for your next tire change The axle "should" come out pretty easy, make sure you put some anti seize on it when you put is back in |

The previous owner of my XB never used anti-seize... the 1st time I took the rear axle out required an 8 foot "cheater pipe" I had my matco 1/2" drive, 3 foot ratchet.....nope, wouldnt do it with my fat ass JUMPING on it!!! took an 8 foot pipe on the end of that 36" ratchet to break it loose..... once it broke loose it was A-okay. |

done. i got a flexible extension, no need to touch the wheel. it took 20mins to replace the stock muffler with the drummer. people in the car in front of me looked back while I was riding in a tunnel ... they had a "what the hell is down there??" face; and a few seconds later they turned to a "oh! is that a ducati??" face. feel like being a fag? by-the-way it's loud but well within the "limits of a street use" thanks for the hints. OH! yes, thanks KDFAB for the great job on that muffler. gianluca |

Americanmadexb said: "Wha la" The phrase, "Pardon my French.", comes to mind. No offense meant, but that was some funny stuff! As far as axle removal goes... I just put a nice long 7/8" boxed end wrench on the axle "nut" & give it a good, quick stomp. (Counter clock-wise) Works for me. |

Nice impact wrench works pretty good too. |
