I searched on the forum and from what I see, the surging that people were experiencing was below 3500 rpm. My surging is at highway rpms around 5000. It feels like it pulsing, slightly at times, heavily at other times. went to Seminole HD in Sanford and "Goober" says its normal. When I was asking about the 3000 rpm rattle he also said that was normal. It really sounds like a lifter (singular) tapping. I have been wrenching on cars since i was knee high to a grasshopper so i don't think its normal. anyone ale to tell me if he is right and I am wrong. My feelings don't get hurt that easily, but my bs meter isn't quite calibrated when it comes to this new machine. Cheers |

My CR was surging between 4-5.5k, very noticeable in 3rd gear. The 141 flash improved things greatly. |

My bike never had the surging at 4-5K no matter conditions or gear selection, but it wasn't Timex smooth down in the low revs ... Nor did I expect it to be. My 09R started life with 131 (the R equivalent to Moose's 141 CR that he mentions above). The update to 142 (or 152 for you CR guys) was an improvement across the whole range. I don't know "Goober" personally, but my normal reaction is to trust my gut and then verify with people that don't have a vested interest in saying "Oh, that's normal." Mike |

My CR had a detectable surge at all constant rpm's, this includes up to 7000rpm. The acceleration...was somewhat, sorta ok. I'd bet that with a good butt dyno, that everyone of these 1125 powered bikes are surge lean. Some just don't feel it for various reasons. When the exhaust tubing is red hot...the tuneup ISN'T right...period. Mike |

I've never seen my exhaust red hot though. |

My CR has the 152 flash. So far the surging/bad rattling has all pretty much been below 3.5k. It does make quite the racket down there under varying load. But the thing is so rev happy it really doesn't spend much time down there. Seems pretty smooth and linear 3.5k and up. |

Got my 09 CR done today with the 152 flash, I'm quite satisfied with the way it runs now all across the board. For some reason the gas leaking from the vent hose stopped also??? One good thing about the new flashes being a little difficult to find, you find out which dealers know their stuff and which ones to stay away from. The first dealer I questioned about the flash didn't have a clue, and bad mouthed Buell the whole time saying they were a money losing proposition. This was the service dept. saying this (a woman), not the sales people. Anyway, I know who will be doing any of my recall work. |

I assumed the rattle at low rpms in higher gears is the clutch because it doesn't do it in 1st gear. My car has an high performance aftermarket clutch and it makes a similar racket. |

Well, maybe my dealer knows what they're doing - I don't have enough data points to know. Anyway, before I picked up the "new" bike, thanks to this forum - I said I wanted 152 loaded - and they made a copy of the printout from the service program that showed it had been properly done. Didn't seem to be a big issue for them - although I can't be sure it would have been done had I not explicitly asked... |

I was told to stop by Rossmeyer and see Jason. He's been recommended for his knowledge and love of Buells. If I ever get time I will stop in there and see if they can test drive and listen to it. That way I can be properly armed with the facts and recommendations. Maybe then "Goober" will realize I'm not a weekend warrior that is completely clueless about what I ride, daily. |

I've only got 100mi on my R, so I've never had it over 5000 RPM. I notice kind of a klunky or jerky sound down around 3000RPM. On the first ride home thought maybe it was predetonation if the gas in it had been sitting around for a year on the showroom floor, but decided it didn't quite sound like that so I also wondered if it was a lifter, but then I started noticing it only does it when the clutch is engaged and there's a low or moderate torque load. Any ideas? |

These Rotax engines are noisy, all kinds of clatters and mechanical noises. Chugging along in too high of gear will net you a sound like a "heavy chain" being dragged across railroad tracks. The thing is that not much gets right until you go past 5000 rpm. Their not a HD type twin,, and they never will be. They're designed to Rock Your World in the upper powerband. I was never easy on mine like you read on here. I was using most of the rpm range from day one,, with some reasonable common sense. |

My CR w/ 152 is now pretty smooth above 2k as long as there's some steady load on it. I think the TPS reset helped, seemed a little jerkier before - I'm not sure the dealer did it after the flash update. I've ridden KTM's and Can-Am Spyder's with Rotax V-twins; IIRC they're all pretty noisy. |
