Hello, I'm a long time Sportster and SV650 owner who just bought a new, 2009 XB9SX. Is it normal for the bike to not idle cold? Until it's warm it will stall if you let off the throttle, though it starts easily. Even when warm the idle is erratic, varying all the way up and down across the number 1 on the tach. It also has a stumble/miss at 3,000 RPM's. The bike is bone stock and just past the 500 mile break-in. While trying to adjust the controls to my liking I also found that the brake line is too short to move the brake lever/handguard or move the bars back. Is there a slightly longer aftermarket one? I also own a 2003 SV650S and despite the Buell supposedly being 90hp (20 more than a SV) it doesn't feel as fast. What is realistic stock power on these? Thank you! |

Nope. Try to manually reset the TPS sensor
quote:To reset an 08+ Buell, do the following: 1. Turn on the key. 2. Set the kill switch to the run position. 3. Don&'t start the engine. Rotate the throttle from fully closed (gently forced closed) to fully open (gently held open), and then back again to closed (gently forced closed). 4. Repeat 3 times. Hold each position (fully open, fully closed) for 1 full second. 5. Turn the key off and on.

About 75hp at the wheel. |

For the reset procedure, switch the order of steps 1 and 2 from above. The run switch is the first thing you turn on, then key on comes next. |

What do you mean by "it doesn't feel as fast"? What is the suspension like on your SV? I came off an I4 with similar power, a Honda 599. I think the Honda felt faster because the suspension was pulled from the bargain basement and slapped on the bike. I find it ironic that the 'paint shaker' V twin feels much more smooth than an I4. Granted the 599 is a buzzy bike, part of it's charm. |

also the peak hp for the xb9 is right up at redline. Sure you'll bounce of it a lot, but you shouldn't hang out there. |

I bought my 2005 from a guy in the middle of winter. Come spring I rode it a bit and wasn't impressed with the power, also had troubles idleing. Discovered that it had a fouled plug, changed it, and then WEEEeeee! So check your plugs, do the TPS reset, and then you should be golden. |

I tried the TPS reset, it did nothing. I got a set of Iridium plugs and they solved all my idle issues. The stock plugs were fouled. |

Does anyone know that 'de-fouling plug trick' that the 08+ bikes are supposed to be able to do? Might help in this case... and it'd also be good information to have floating around here. My defouling plug trick tends to be a trip up to redline a couple times a week, but it's not to official a method. |

the stock plugs are crap, I had a similar problem, and the platinum plugs work great! Just make sure if you put them in yourself to not cross the threads in the head or you will have made a very expensive error. yeah, personal experience. |

While in High School, I used to regard it as my solemn duty to run my Dad's Powerglide 300hp/327 ci Impala up to 55 - 60 in low to blow the carbon out. Didn't bother telling Dad about such routine matters. |

Update: I just went for a ride, 25 miles each way. The bike idled great, even on cold start. It ran good but it was still weak below 4500 RPM and hesitant between 3000 - 3500 RPM. I began to suspect that the intake was leaking air because it felt so "dry" and sounded very lean. On the way home I stopped not far from home to adjust the suspension. When I restarted the bike it sounded different, when I got on the throttle it pulled harder and the mid range flat spot is gone. Apparently that's how long it took for the computer to re-learn. I think it's interesting that apparently the computer only loads the updated map into EEPROM after the engine is shut down. |
