First off, I would just like to say Hello. This is my first post on this sight although I've read many others. Anyway I've been riding street bikes for 45 years, always cruisers, although I did buy a Honda V45 interceptor years ago to try out sportbikes. It just didn't have the right sound for me. I just sold my Harley FXDX a couple of months ago and decided to try something different. I love the tube frame Buells so I got a 1999 X1 lightning. It's been pouring rain here since I bought it so the only ride on it was when I bought it. I LOVE IT !!! It has a "race only ECM and aftermarket header/muffler system. It also has 45,000 km. on it but runs like a top. My questions are these. I read lots about how bad the 1999 X1 Lightning is compared to the 2002. What exactly is the difference? Are there any upgrades I need to do to make it more reliable? Thanks in advance for any info. |

I think there was some problem with the stock ECM that resulted in a lean condition in the mid-range. However, if you have a race ecm that should not be a problem. X-1s are cool bikes. Welcome. |

Ridge rider, Welcome the machines are largely the same, the differences are minor Stuff to check rear shock condition and type oil in gear box and engine what repairs mods have been done issues are known and documented. #1 GET A SHOP MANUAL Suggested Upgrades and repairs (as needed) Oil pump drive gear replacement change the steel one for bronze, check American Sport Bike for the gear if this goes it usualy takes your motor with it grenade plate removal of the spring plate in teh clutch (grenade plate) and refitting with 2 steel and 1 fiber plates in its place, You need a spring compressor tool to do this if the plate fails it messes up the clutch basket primary chain shoe check (early shoes were thin and broke easily) rocker boxes leaking, replacing the base gasket for the box (rite of passage) Isolators, front and rear Inspect and replace as needed check mount condition (front head) consider replacing mount and the special high strength bolts. American Sport Bike is the best resource here do not reuse the bolts primary seal on crank at about 30K miles oil pukes out of tranny vent and the motor consu intake seals & injector orings if they are over 2 years old check the belt tension about 2" of slack suspension unloaded. check wheel bearings |

Thanks for all the info guys. I will go through the checklist carefully. I have a shop manual on order. Here's a pic of the bike. I have no insurance on it so I stuck it in the living room while I make room in the shop. It also came with a complete set of blue plastics.

I have a 99 X1 as well and love it to death. I ride it to work 3 days a week 45mins each way and cant get enough of it. Question to everyone on the recalls... if i ask the dealer to check if the updates were done to my bike and they were NOT, are these updates free or am i paying for them? just wondering how that works- thanks |

I'd like to take the airbox and scoop off my bike for a while and install a forcewinder. Can someone tell me what the small panels that cover the exposed portions of the tank are called and where I can buy them? Thanks. |

If you cut at the red line you can slide it on farther and adjust it to your liking and performance. The original snorkel is designed to be certain length. It worked very well and i still have it! |
