The belt broke on my 98 S3T. What am I in for if I replace the belt myself. I have the whole winter to get it done, a heated garage and tools. Do I need to take the swing arm off on this bike? |

Sspilotmi I believe that the arm does not have to come off one isolator must be removed on the belt side to allow replacement of the belt There are several methods, contact Buellistic above he has info for the procedure, |

DANGER !!! YOU MUST COMPRESS THE LEFT ISOLATOR AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE SO YOU DO NOT HAVE TO SPREAD THE FRAME ANY MORE THAN NECESSARY TO REMOVE THE RIGHT ISOLATOR !!! |

Dunno what's involved in removing an isolator by itself, but it's not that difficult to just drop the swingarm and mounting block off the bike. Having a buddy will help with lining the mounting block back up with the bolt holes on the back of the engine case, and squeezing the whole thing back up between the isolators. I'd recommend installing new rear isolators when it all goes back together. |

Thanks for the help here. Next question, how long do the sprockets last on Buells? I have 57,000 miles on the bike and the sprockets are original. |

The rear sprocket's protective chrome coating will start to flake off and chew away at a new belt. My rear sprocket started flaking pretty early on say 35,000 or so? I didn't bother replacing the rear and the next belt only lasted 15,000. the one after that about the same. I swapped the rear sprocket and we'll see if that was belt killer Only time will tell. |

I broke 2 belts in the first 11,000 miles running them scary loose. It may have been from raw abuse. I agree with PK. Drop the swingarm block. This way you don't have to stretch the frame or try to compress the ISOs. It's pretty easy with two people. |
