If so, what is the 'total' cost of parts and what is entailed? Do the wheels come with the new triple bearings/seals so it is only a simple tire change, I hope, I hope? If not, does anyone have a parts list?

I keep reading about recent bearing failures, even a 'black' seal at 6,000 miles(!); on short day trips, on trips to Alaska, and on and on. That kind of unreliability, and safety risk, is something Id like to avoid if there is a reasonable solution. Ths.

I just got mine, and it does not come assembled, but does include the axle as well. Court's post is accurate. Only need new bolts for rotor and pulley, if you are using pulley and rotor from old wheel. Looks like avery robust set-up, and the new bearings are much larger! List price 336.

Read around the thread and you'll find all the details. I just didn't want to be heading out for a 900-1,000 mile day and having to look at the bearings at each stop.

I don't know what caused the problem.

I do know the 2010 is insanely over engineered.

Be careful when ordering these parts for a Uly XT.
I just had an uncomfortable conversation with my local Buell dealer after I ordered the 2010 rear wheel/bearing/axle setup for my '08 XT. When I went to pick it up they had only ordered me the wheel, not the kit that included the wheel, bearings, seals, and axle. Then they wanted to sell me the rest of the parts for a total of $70 more than the kit price after what I had already paid for the wheel. Long story short, I walked with the wheel and told them I would get the rest of the parts elsewhere if they were not willing to sell me the rest of the parts for the kit price.
Moral of the story: Even the 'good' Buell dealers are relatively clueless when it comes to getting you the parts you need. Make sure they are getting you the entire setup of parts needed to make the conversion to the 2010 wheel on your XT.

Does the wheel kit come in any other color than Magnesium tone, that is the 3 bearing design? I know that on the Buell website all colors of wheels are offered, but do not include the axle/bearing kit. I was under the impression that the wheel "kit" was for the X model, not the XT.

American Sport Bike has the kit for the X in stock. Give Al a call, he may be able to get the one for the XT as well.

Total cost of parts for my X kit + new bolts for the sprocket and rotor including shipping was $420.

I'm not sure there is a "kit" for XT (or XB, for that matter)...I think the only "kit" is magnesium-tone, for the X, with the rim reinforcements.

This rear wheel problem is a G-Dam defect in materials and workmanship. Is anyone up for a suit against H-D to get them to replace the rear wheel. Enough talk has happened, now is the time. By the way, mine was starting to fail at 5000 miles and was found when I changed the rear tire. I put new ones in myself due to the Harley shop not having the bearings and the eta being quote (at least several weeks) so I ordered them from American Sport Bike and received them in 2 days.

Count me out of that lawsuit, and I have had fronts and rears fail on several sets of rims on several different bikes. Its a warranty issue, simple as that, warranty takes care of it and fixes you up.

Oh jeez...not another lawsuit-chicken-little-sky-is-falling post.

Stuff wears out. Where does it say (or did it EVER say) that a wheelbearing is a lifetime item? On ANYthing?

Also, where is it written that Product Improvement is an "admission of guilt"? Again - if nobody improved the product, the automotive industry would still be building Model T's, wood wheels and all.

Froggy - thanks for the part numbers, one day I'll figure out how you come up with these things....lol. And just for grins, I picked one at random (I think it was Sunset Orange), and it is indeed wheel, bearings, spacer, dust seals, and axle.

Not sure I agree with that.

I haven't seen any stats that indicate what % of Uly/XB model owners have experienced the problem, so I can't really come out and label it an engineering underestimation. To me, a warranty doesn't "fix you up" unless the repair/replacement solves the problem, and that doesn't seem to be the case with pre-2010 wheel bearings.

But regardless, why would something like this be worthy of a lawsuit unless you were injured in a crash caused by a failure or something? Any type of bearing will fail eventually, so I always check the ones I can at pretty usual intervals. So the RWBs suck ass. I'll live with it.
I intend to just treat it like a preventative maintenance item by checking and greasing (thanks Electraglide) the bearings and replacing if needed. Even if I switch to the 2010 wheel, I'll still be checking them (just not as often hopefully).

-1 on the lawsuit for me.

I sometimes wonder how many of the "sue the bastards" crowd have ever actually sued anyone?

My personal Attorney, Ms. Anne, bills $690 per hour, many are in the $1,000/hr range now.

One thing I like about having a great attorney is that the prospect of spending a couple grand just to discuss something has made me a very diplomatic fellow.

If I have a problem, I sit down with the folks I have the problem, tell them my point of view, ask for theirs, ask them to understand (not adopt) mine, and I try to understand theirs.

Then I ask "what will solve this?"

I've gotten old smart.

Some of you MUST come to my class at Columbia when I do my session on litigation in construction law!

Not the dealer, but Buell has warranty upgraded 2 wheels last I have heard.

They may, in the event you describe, replace the 2008 wheel with a 2010.

They may NOT replace a 2008 wheel with a 2010.

It's been tried on 3 occasions I am aware of.

Now, what did I miss on 'greasing' the sealed bearings that Electraglide was said to have mentioned? I didn't know you could grease 'sealed' bearings but there are a lot of things I don't know. lol Anyone have a link or thoughts on the subject? Ths.

Good lord - what type of law would that be?

Nationally, the average billing rate is around $290 per hour.

Her specialty is Employment Law. Their firm handles a variety of things from estate planning to family matters.

NYC tends to be higher. My Mom has an attorney, accountant and a trust officer in Kansas who all bill less than $200/hr.

Real Estate Attorneys, I'd grant you, are among the lowest paid. I am currently selling a house, closing next week, and you couldn't scrape both the attorneys together and make one brain.

One of the idiots . . I'm not kidding, expected me to accept something called an "Attorney's Escrow Account check. It's a game they play where they have the lender deposit the money in the account of the seller's attorney. The attorney writes a check at closing and gets the interest for 6 or 7 days.

I have a bad habit, doesn't matter if I am buying a car or real estate, of requesting that all documents be sent to me 3 days in advance to allow me to read and study them. I sent the real estate sales agreement back with a note . . . "the buyer and seller in this agreement have spent the last two months being qualified, vetted and checked out. Why on God's earth would I accept a check from the least scrutinized person involved. Please arrive at the closing (note it is within days of the expiration of the $8,000 credit) with a CERTIFIED BANK CHECK made payable to me . . . or I will walk out of the closing without saying a word. I have changed the contract wording to reflect this.

Us construction workers are real sticklers for detail.

I have an indy., a very qualified Harley/Buell guy, that I've known for years and who is also a good friend, do all of my bike work. I have a new 2008 XB12XT and all three shop manuals (parts, shop manual, Elec. Diag.). If I switch to the 2010 wheel will he need a 2010 shop manual to get it right? Also, besides the wheel kit, what other parts do I need to get for the change out? I've read about new bolts, etc. If anyone has the names/part nos. for the bolts and any other needed parts I would really appreciate it. Ths. a lot.

The included instructions should be all he needs. Only thing I would worry about is the torque values on the new wheel, but other than that it should be 100% the same.
