Hi, New owners of a 2002 X1W that runs great but, it gets really hot and we are concerned about it in the summer. Does any one have any suggestions for cooling her down like an aftermarket electrical fan and where I can obtain? Thanks in advance for your help! | ||

Buell has a fan designed specifically for the X1. It is stock on the Japanese models, and is designed to cool the intake manifold. Whether it has any meaningful effect on engine cooling has been debated with no hard numbers on either side. I have one on mine, and I believe it helps, if the amount of heat that flows off the right side of the engine is any indication. It really only comes on if you've been sitting still for a long time. If you live in a hot climate, you may want to get it. It's $200, so if you don't need it, don't waste your money. Jeff | ||

We live in Indy which I wouldnt call really warm especially right now.  but, we do tour sometimes and even just in town it seems pretty warm. You think that would make it worth while? I'm always up for anything that might extend the life of an engine. $200.00 isnt cheap though. Thanks for your help, Scott | ||

I'm an owner of a 2000 X1 and had the same problem. My fix. The race chip. I haven't had a problem with my bike running hot since I installed it and had the TPS reset. Good luck with it | ||

Wolf.... start with running full synthetic if you have not done that yet. It does two things, it will probably lower the current running temperature of your engine, which is a step in the right direction, and it will raise the temperature at which "really bad things" start to happen to your engine, which is another step in the right direction. All in all, I bet you gain a 100 to 200 degree margin by switching to full synthetic. Mobil 1 VTwin is great, as is the new screaming eagle stuff, but priced awfully high. Castrol and Valvoline both now have a full synthetic 20w50 that is easy to find for $5 per quart. | ||

Thats actually something else I've been looking into. I've used Mobile 1 in my cars and trucks for years and it seems to prolong the engine life extensively. Just never thought about it lowering temps. *smacks own head* DOH! Do you use synthetic trani fluid as well? What kind of luck have had with it? I'm thinking of switching the bikes over to it and my truck as well but, I dont know anyone that uses it to ask. | ||

Mobil 1 gearcase oil, though Harley now comes out and says the 20w50 full synthetic works fine as well. The gear oil will have some additives that make it last longer but that you would not want in your engine oil, so I think it is worth getting the gear oil. How does it work? I had as much of an improvement in my shifting quality by adding a $5 bottle of mobil 1 gear oil as I did from installing a $200 banke shifter (which is an awsome unit, don't get me wrong). It was so much better it was a little alarming. | ||

I did not notice any change in my bike running hot after I switched to Mobil 1. However it did run smoother and I feel it revs nicer. I do use Mobil 1 75/90 gear oil for the tranny. Big difference in the shift quality. No trouble finding neutral. I just got the primary seal done at the dealership under warrenty and they put HD tranny oil in there. Huge step backwards. Go with the Mobil 1 and get the race chip. | ||

I've heard good things about a cooler by Jagg but, I havent priced one yet. When I bought the bike (used) it had a race chip already installed. Makes a big difference over the other Buells I've ridden. I didnt get to ride one of them long enough to gauge heat though without the chip I'm hoping the synthetic trani fluid helps my bike as much as you guys report. My only real complaints with the bike are it shifts doesnt shift as smooth as I would like and right now the clutch is too stiff (shouldnt be hard to fix.) | ||

I also use Mobil 1 75W90 in my Firebolt's tranny. Huge improvement over the stock Harley SportTrans crap. Shifts a lot smoother, very easy to fine neutral, the whole shebang. Where the hell are you guys getting it for $5 a quart, though? Only places I've been able to find it it's $8 a quart. Bryan |
