If you bought a new Buell recently from an out of state dealer and need to re-title it in Illinois do it by snail mail. The Secretary of State's field offices rely on a computer database to verify your VIN. From what I can gather from the main office in Springfield, major manufacturers feed this database with VINs soon after the vehicles are produced. Not so with Big Dog, Iron Horse, Buell... At least in the downtown Chicago field office, there was no institutional memory about "how to do it by hand". The supervisor there recommended mailing my request to Springfield. I'm curious if anyone else has had issues re-titling a new bike in Illinois. |
