I am off to test ride a 09 XB12Scg at a HD dealer What is a good deal? Any pros or cons on this bike? I'm am female and about 5'6" and it looks like it is a good fit. I have a Blast and an S2 which I love but am never completely relaxed riding. |

I think most of the XB12Sxx bikes are going for around $6500 to $6800 brand new after the discounts. All the 12R's at my local were around $6800 last night. |

I went to my local HD dealer and I was offered a cherry bomb XB12Scg for $5500 plus $325 freight, $995 dealer prep, $390 doc, $28.25 Lic. fee plus 8.1% sales tax. $7833 out the door. My questions are: are all the fees legit? is it common to charge sales tax on all these fees? is this a good deal? |

$7833 is a GREAT deal compared to the past. I got $10,700 OTD on an Ss. With the recent developments and the $5000 dealer incentive I think you could get lower. Only con to the Scg is the very low travel suspension. Bumpier ride then an S (which is even less then an Uly/Ss). If you are a goat trail fanatic then I'd look for something else, if you normally ride smoother/average roads it will be great. Nice short wheelbase will flick around easily and the low center of G and seat height will make you feel very comfortable. To me (5'11") it feels more like a toy then a motorcycle, which is a good thing if your on the shorter side. Never ridden one, just sat on a bunch. |

I was told that they are only getting $3000 back not the $5000. I offered $5000 as they had $7495 on the bike, and they countered with $5500. I put $100 to hold, do you think I should try again? They said they had a lot of calls as of late, so I don't know if I can do any better. What about the fees, are they about what you paid? Did you pay tax on all the fees or just the bike. I have bought all my bikes used so I am not familiar with the fees. |

In general my opinion is that I will not pay the freight or setup fees.Once upon a time a good Suzuki dealer told me that he doesn't charge those because it is already built into the MSRP and any dealer charging those fees was somewhat dishonest. The 390 documentation fee is crap, get the title application and go stand in line at the DMV to register it. As far as the rebates given, the dealers that are going to continue being parts and service centers got a bigger rebate. So either they are going to be out and you'll need to go elsewhere for the service in the very near future, or they are putting $2000 in their pockets. I would probably pass and buy a used machine for a little less. You could call them back and say that some of the charges are too high and you want your $100 back and see what they are willing to do to keep the sale. Several people have posted here that the rebates are $5k on the 1125's but only $3k on the XB's. $7833 OTD probably isn't bad. IIRC the freight is a pre-calculated amount the dealer has no control over (the actual charge for Buell to ship the bike to the dealer). The dealer prep fee is what they're charging you for uncrating the bike, adding oil and gas, checking the air in the tires, etc. The doc fee is what they're charging you for their admin person to type up a bill of sale and title paperwork. IMHO the doc fee and dealer prep are negotiable. Not sure what the sales tax should be charged on but it doesn't seem like it would apply to everything. |

OK, maybe my $5k is wrong then. |

I negotiated the price of the bike but not the fees. I don't know if they would budge on their fees. I love the bike but I don't NEED the bike but it seems there is a feeding frenzy on Buells and they implied they are getting calls from all over so I don't know. What should I pay out the door? Any and all advice is appreciated. (Message edited by chi-girl on October 24, 2009) |

Since you don't need it, be prepared to walk away and see what they will do. You do have the upper hand since you can certainly live without the machine. I certainly would refuse to pay the paperwork fee, and I would probably refuse the set up fee, that's more than $1000 difference right there. If they really have other people willing to plop down money, they will not hesitate to refund your deposit. $6600 out the door plus whatever it really costs to register and title the vehicle where you are would be a pretty good price. If your state requires a vehicle inspection sticker, make sure that is done before you leave with the bike or it will be another expense. |

995.00 dealer prep is insane. They are screwing you on that one. What in the hell can they do to a new bike that costs 995.00. The doc fee is also a farse but most charge it and just pocket the money. (Message edited by phazernut on October 24, 2009) |

At a shop rate of $75 per hour that would be more than 12 hours plus the cost of oil. That sure is a lot of setup for a bike that has both wheels on it and is ready fill with fluids and ride. I bet they spend less than 3 hours to uncrate a bike and get it ready to ride. |

Chigirl, I just bought a 09 XB12Scg for 6,500. With the dealer prep and everything else it was less than 7K OTD (6,850 I think). AND since I bought two bikes they are delivering for free 100 miles South of the shop. Seems to me that 995 is a little steep. |

since yall are on the subject, what can i expect to pay for a 03 XB9S with the race kit. black with black powdercoated wheels. looks good in tha pics. around 23,000 miles. im a little worried about the mileage but the bike seems legit. what do yall think? |

Not more than $3000. The race kit is actually a liability if your state goes to emissions tests on bikes or EPA checks on the muffler for noise limits. Yes some states are talking about this. |

I went to my local dealer yesterday and rode a hero blue 09 xb12scg with 33 miles on it. I LOVED it. I put down $500 to hold it so i could decide how to pay for it. Price: $6495 + sales tax = $6885 OTD no other fees..... Seems like a great deal to me. |

chigirl- What matters, and the only thing that matters is the otd price - by that I mean tax, fees whatever bs they want to put in. Also in some states labor (fees for prep, repairs, etc) are not taxable. Not taxable=not income tax write offable. Have the whole purchase as one price. As for the fees, don't get caught up. It is a negotiation tactic to distract you from the price. Remember you have no way of knowing if the master tech @ 35 an hr (his cut) or the pimple faced oil change kid did the work @ 8 an hr. In business their costs are their responsibility just as yours are yours. Suggest you stop comparing apples and oranges to apples and oranges (fees and price) and convert them all to apples so you can compare better. (otd price) How they allocate fees and costs in their organization is their issue. I just bought a xb12ss. I cut the best deal I could out here in CA. The bikes are going real fast here so I am certain I left a few hundred on the table. I did do considerably better than others I know of this week. pm me if you want a coupyle of tips. good luck, you will enjoy it. cb |

Excessive add-on fees just killed a deal to me. 11or12 hundred bucks additional per bike, not including tax/tags. Ugh. Back to looking around at other brands. |

Their doc and setup fee are higher than any dealer I've ever seen. But like another poster said, the OTD price is all that matters. A lot of people seem to be paying around 7000 (and even less) OTD. Call some other dealers and see. Shop around. If you don't need the bike, then just go in and tell them you've shopped around, and you're willing to give them $X OTD or you'll walk (as long as you are willing to walk). As long as your offer isn't insulting or they think one of their "callers" will come in during the next few days and buy it for their price, they'll go for it. Still a lot of bike for that price. I gave them a price of $5000 they came back at $5500 and an out the door price of $7833. I thought I could still negotiate the fees but now I realize I need to just ask for the OTD price as suggested here. I may call them tomorrow morning and see if I can get them to get me OTD under $7000. The worse they can do is say no and I will have time to decide. Any other words of wisdom will be greatly appreciated. |

Have them (or do it yourself) give you a quote for MSRP plus fee's. I would imagine this number to be around $12,000 in which case, deduct the $5,000 bonus they are getting and you should be able to get an OTD price of $7,000. |

I won't do business with dealers that charge you to do business with them or charge you to setup there products!! That's insane!! I use to work for a new car dealer back in my high school days and like another poster said setup is included in the MSRP. They are trying to gouge you. Tell them $7000 OTD or you walk. Chigirl are you anywhere near Chicago area? I know if a red/black XB12R for sale brand new that is much cheaper. |

Most of those fees are either false or grossly inflated. As has been said, freight is a legitimate fee. So is some prep. To give you an idea, I just paid $5,995.00 plus $695 in fees for a leftover 2008 STT. Some dealers will drop the fees but they'll just build them into the price somewhere else. They have to make money like everyone else. It's a shell game. Doesn't matter what the money's for, just what the out the door price is. |

I went to my dealer yesterday and was told the fees were NON-NEGOTIABLE. They said the only thing we could negotiate was the price of the bike which was already good at $5500, it was the $1740 plus $146 in taxes on those fees, that still bother me. I told them I would walk unless they got me out the door for under $7000. My salesman's boss, who was hidden behind a door, refused to budge, so before they refunded my deposit, I asked that my salesman go over his boss' head. He said he would, but I could tell he was nervous about doing that. I wish I could talk to these guys directly instead of the bs games because I don't think my salesman had any clue about the rebates, ect. He kept saying they would lose money if they went any lower on the price but how could they with so much is "air" fees? They just wouldn't give an OTD price. VERY FRUSTRATING. They are letting a cash buyer who has been a loyal customer as far as service and sales on my other 2 Buells walk, when they haven't even sold the other XB. Now I guess I am probably waiting until they call to tell me to come pick up my deposit. |

Sounds like the price they gave is the OTD. They won't budge. Fair enough. You know this dealer's OTD price. You have three choices: 1. take the deal 2. take the price and shop it by knocking off a few hundred and seeing who will bite 3. walk and enjoy what you have. In some areas there's a hardening of prices, and in my area almost all xb bikes are sold. Some areas they sit. Being as you are in Vegas I don't know what choices you have or how far you want to drive. Might spend a couple hundred to save three if you understand what I mean...Is that worth it? |

When we first spoke and I gave him a price, I didn't know about the excess fees and when I went in to finalize the deal, I thought we would address them then. They don't use OTD price or reveal the fees until you name your price. I know it is a sale tactic, and I should have been more educated, but I still think it is a little shady. I just bought a new car and it didn't have that much in fees. I just don't like feeling like I am being taken advantage of, especially when I know some of the statements are lies. |

They tacked the fees on in addition to the price you gave them? Or did bike + fees equal the price you gave them? |
Chigirl

They tacked on the $1876.76 onto the price I gave them. I knew there would be tax but never knew the fees weren't included in the price we were negotiating or I would have started lower or walked away to begin with. I was naive and thought the price we were discussing was the total price and the only additional would be the taxes. It wasn't until I got home and my friend told me the $1876 wasn't included in that price. MSRP on the bike(according to their tag) was $10,495 minus the rebate the salesman said they were getting from Buell was the price he gave me. It was then that I posted here for advice. The part where I think is shady was saying dealers were stacking rebates and that is how everyone was getting the bikes for $6850 +/- and that their service department had already be "paid" the $995 + tax and they were separate from them so they couldn't cut it any. The fees are excessive, almost pure profit, and I think the salesman should have told me these are our fees, they are non negotiable and include them in your offer before he asked me to name my price. |

Chigirl- Money is money. What you pay is what you pay - whether called "fees" or "price." If you want a lower price, they give it to you and charge a "fee." You don't want to pay fees, they charge a higher price. Their profits and costs and how allocated are purely up to them. If $7833 is your otd price and you don't agree to it then walk. What they are doing is a distraction tactic. All you care about is OTD. Don't get emotionally involved. Find if there's another source. If not, decide whether you want it or not. You might save a few hundred dollars, or a buyer may beat you to the punch. One thing is certain, the less you care the cheaper the price generally is. |
