i love my gpr. easy to install. i wrote up a DIY how-to thread covering the install on my 1125r while at the same time tightening the steering neck bearings. search function should bring it up. Can't say anything about the ohlins, have no experience with that. |

Dampers inhibit the natural front wheel tendency to stabilize itself. Some motion in the handlebars is natural. Loosen your grip on the bars as that causes most steering issues. |

I am very happy with mine. I think it made the bike feel less squirrely. Maybe it was all in my head, but either way I would do it again. |

GPR is a great unit, you won't regret it. There's a reason most racing organizations REQUIRE steering dampers, and a reason so many factory street bikes come with them stock. And that reason is NOT faulty engineering. Start with your damping at a low setting, if you crank it up high initially, you may find your steering becomes to SLOW. Use caution here. |

It's expected that anyone would defend a $500 purchase. But as has been noted previously, don't crank it down too far. (Message edited by fresnobuell on October 24, 2009) |

1/4 mile dragracing mine,Pingel shift,w.o.t upshifts at 10.2k rpm. The bike gets scary squirrely as weight transfers rearward on the shift. I'm assuming the front is just barely skimming track. i plan to strap down the front in spring, but no way in hell I will do it w/out a damper. Ordering a Gpr unit tomorrow. Thanks guys! |

What happens to a bike that tosses a rider during a nasty tank-slapper? It immediately straightens itself out when it starts the ghost ride. It don't want to get into an argument, but the rider has more to do with headshake than anything. |

operator error has much to do with most types of get-offs, and a damper, if nothing else, would help to compensate for this. Why on earth would you try and encourage someone to NOT use safety equipment? You seem pretty much a standup guy here Fres, so your logic on this escapes me. Yes, in MOST, not all, cases, simply relaxing your grip will stop the headshake. How many times do you have to fall off before you learn this? Don't you think it would be better to have some type of safety equipment that might help prevent or lessen the headshake in the first place, so you don't have to try and learn the hard way? OH HELL YES! WE DO! It's called a steering damper! |

It won't stop a highside if thats what your gettin at. Highsides are caused when you let off of the throttle when it has stepped out on ya, and you instinctively close off the throttle. The rear tire grips and you get thrown. Traction control can help but not a steering damper. I never bothered with one on my 1125R though I've put them on other bikes I've had. If I did though I would go with one like the Ohlins that mounts nice and neat underneath. Those GPR's just look funky mounted in an otherwise clean looking area. But thats just my opinion. |

I may end up with a damper on my CR before it's all said and done. She gets awfully light on corner exits and with the high bars, I find I tend to hold on to the bars a bit too much when riding aggressively. I wouldn't mind picking up a set of clubmans for track days. |

This is a ridiculous thread. It is every time dampers are the topic. Some racing organizations require them. The unfortunate racer at Fontana in January would most likely be alive if he had one. All the he-man know-it-all expert riders on this thread that tell you to not use one are full of crap. Sorry but you've hit a nerve. Before I got my GPR I got a lot of head shake at the transitions to the drag strip at the track I ride the most. Loosening up my grip didn't help. The damper did. BTW you do want to experiment with the least amount to use. Too tight doesn't work. Which is why the GPR is superior to the Ohlins. You can adjust it while riding. At Arroyo and Sandia I want a little more than I do at Vegas. No problem adjust to feel while riding on track. They're great. |

Does the GPR look that bad? It's functional and I'm not too worried about looks.

thank you, Duggram! Your use is the same as mine. The hard upshifts get my bike REALLY nervous, and I'm kinda busy on my passes to contemplate grip strength,LoL. A GPR unit and APPROVED strap will be on my machine this spring. NHRA Requirements are NOT debatable. |

Why on earth would you try and encourage someone to NOT use safety equipment? I don't think I am. Simply pointing out that a damper on the street is more than likely compensating for rider induced errors. Of course it's fine to get a damper for some insurance. But some people might want to learn how to fix it via riding technique, as opposed to adding a piece of equipment to address a symptom. |

not wanting to get into the "do you need one" debate, but the OP question - is the Ohlins better? I see the GPR is easy to adjust - how does the Ohlins adjust? Just curious really - no plan to get either. |

The Ohlins from the Buell race catalog is a really nice piece. The damping action is smooth and predictable, and it works great for what I bought it for which is sorting out the light front end under WOT conditions on the track. Adjustments, even while riding, are easy. The adjustment knob ends up just under the triple tree. It's easy to get to on a longer straight if you are trying to initially sort the bike. After I got my set, I've not touched it again. The BIG drawback for the Ohlins kit, IMHO, is it's a PITA to install. You will have to remove a wiring guide under the steering stem, and it's a beotch getting all the wires in place around the mount. Took me about 3 hours to install the thing! |
