Anyone have a muffler they can have shipped to Kansas city by Thursday?  We took Patty's bike in to have a tire changed before our big ride to Arkansas this weekend, and they apparently helped along a rusted crack in the top of the muffler while on the lift. Now it's a pretty bad leak. She's uneasy about riding that way for 4 hours each way, she's holding out hope someone has one they are willing to part with! | ||

I don't know? I hadn't thought of that. I figured I'd need to take wire wheel to it first. I'm really afraid to pull it off before we leave in fear we might have a problem with one of the studs. Home Depot sells some Fahrenheit 2000 expoxy - needs some time - fill it with that - should get you home. EZ | ||

It will bust if left like that, go get it welded at a muffler shop - like 20 bucks. EZ | ||

Think we can get away riding 12 hours on it un-treated or do we need do this now? She wants a new muffler anyway, sick of looking at the rust. If it was in better condition I would media blast it and have it painted, but it seems like it might be on it's last leg? | ||

I took the bike to HD tonight and begged them to pull the muffler off so I can take it somewhere tomorrow to get it welded up. Wish we had more time to deal with this, we could save the money having it pulled, welded, and installed and put it toward a new exhaust system. | ||

Trust me I know, that muffler will only continue to crack, even after it is welded. Just get a new set of mounting hardware and get an aftermarket muffler. | ||

That's the plan for the future, but we have to button it up before we leave for Jasper, AR Friday morning. Hoping the Blast will make it 6 hours there and 6 hours back on Sunday! Think after a weld it will at hold up for that? | ||

A good welds should hold for c12 hours riding. When you get home, change it out. You could try applying several layers of muffler bandage over the weld for insurance purposes. I've never tried it on a bike muffler but it worked for me on a car once. RE: Your other post: I run a Jardine RT 1. I've had it a year and no problems (c6K miles) Check out the muffler section: there is quite a choice! Safe riding, and give my regards to jasper! (I used to live not too far from there!) I wouldnt worry about it. I was going to post to leave it alone and fix it when you get back....and I'll leave it at that. Any other exhaust than stock will be LOUD, relatively speaking. Then again, I dont mind it loud. The voices in my head drown out the ringing in my ears anyway! The Jardine w/quiet core is a good bet and the V & H is cheapest and will last, but you have to repack the stuffing once in a while or it gets loud and will fracture if left that way long enough. The D & D ($300) is also nice, but again loud when opened up. | ||

Having to change "stuffing" is a new one to me. How often do you have to do that? Is it difficult / expensive? | ||

Well' I'd say about every 5000 miles or less. The stuffing is about $8-$20 and if you pack it really tight it will last longer and probably be quieter. Not hard to do unless your muffler is in really bad shape. You can prep the muffler beforehand by anti seizing the bolts. From what I remember its easier to do the riveted end instead of the bolted end.
