Okay, so I've really been needing to make a catch can. I've been letting it just drip out a small filter hung just above my muffler, and it's made a godawful sludgy mess on everything underneath. I've been looking for a good canister for awhile now, but couldn't find anything I liked. I had one of the normal air compressor filters, but it seemed way too constrictive (try blowing through one!). So, I'm standing in line today to check out at Wal-mart (got some new house shoes!), and I see the display for the 5 Hour Energy shots. It's EXACTLY the size I've been looking for. Gave it a quick squeeze, and it's actually made of a surprisingly durable plastic. So, I spent $2.50 on a caffeine shot just to get the bottle. A short trip to Advance and I had a new filter, new 3/8 vacuum line tee, and a set of breather tube grommets, to the tune of about $14 (filter was $10 by itself). I drilled a 29/64ths hole in the top of the bottle (gradually worked up until the grommet and tee fit in). Everything squeezes together very tightly... don't see a need for any hose clamps. To empty, I can just tilt the assembly sideways and unscrew the bottle off. I wish I could have used a 3/8 Y-shaped adapter, but I couldn't find one in the right size. We'll see how this works... I sorta' expect I may get oil on my pants unless I can find a different hose adapter. If I like the setup, I'll paint the bottle black. Or, I may buy their "high potency" formula which I believe comes in a black bottle. Anyway, here's a pic of the setup. It's held in with a single zip tie around the hose and oil cooler bracket. The bottle only makes contact with the bracket, so I don't think it'll get too hot and melt.

I need to do this. Are you worried about the plastic melting? |

"Are you worried about the plastic melting?" "The bottle only makes contact with the bracket, so I don't think it'll get too hot and melt." lol Not my cup o' tea, but looks slick! I routed it to the ground on my X1, haven't done the XB yet...need to figure out something that ill look stock... |

Reminds me of the guy who had wrapped Red Bull cans around his shocks external reservoirs. |

That bike looks so clean! Wow. Nice fix there, swordsman. Like my 2002 Dodge Cummins breather fix. |

Nice, it's great that you guys are finding a use for the 5 hour energy drinks. That stuff is horrible. My crew drink 'em all the time. I tried one once and it made me feel worse than some of the crap I did when in I was in my teens and 20's. Ohhh......sh........Clunk I've fallen and I can't get up. |

Those things are indeed nasty. I drank it just so I wouldn't be wasting any of my money. It didn't taste that bad, kinda' burned a bit going down (acidic), but HOLY SHIT they STINK. No joke, it smells like one of those people you run across in Wal-mart that you KNOW haven't bathed in, oh, maybe 4 or 5 days, because you can smell them from the other end of the isle. That sour, bitter, spicy smell. Now imagine they're wearing a berry scented air freshener from the automotive department around their neck. That's what 5 Hour Energy smells like. I see Andy has no faith in my mighty plastic! We'll see how well it works. If it doesn't, it wouldn't be a big deal to wrap a bit of insulating material around another one. Right now I'm more concerned with the possibility of the oil being blown up into the filter instead of being pulled into the bottle by gravity. Dunno which will prove to be the stronger force. ~SM |

It may blow the oil up into the filter, but it should drip back down when you shut the engine off. I think I'm going to have to machine something for my 9R, probably look a lot like the Drummer and the one that American Sport Bike sells. |

There is space if the swing arm to hide the bottle if you want to look stock, although I always thought they should put more oil there. Also, here in California with the impending smog check law, I would run it back to the intake after pass thru the bottle, so only air is getting into the engine and not the oil. I'm not sure if I can post this but I always want to see how much oil is in it, http://www.twinmotorcycles.nl/webshop/artikel.asp? guid=YXHFSC&aid=1903&cid=283&s=&a= Christopher |

Yeah, with this setup, if I start getting oil blowing out the filter, I'll probably get another grommet and drill a hole in the side of the bottle, and stuff it with one of those mesh pot scrubber thingies to help catch the residue before it makes it up into the top. BTW, anyone know where to pick up some 3/8 vaccum line adapters that are L-shaped? I checked both Advance and Auto Zone, and they only had straight ones and T's. ~SM (Message edited by Swordsman on October 22, 2009) |
