I know, I know, why don't I go out and look at the thing to find out? Simple answer is, the bike's not here yet. And I'll be on the road when it rolls up to 600 miles, so somewhere in Nebraska I'll need to replace the oil & filter. I want to carry what I'll need with me. The owner's manual illustrates the left and right sides of the engine case, but it's hard to tell what the fastener sizes are. Here's my guess, I'd love to be corrected: Left side drainplug: 15mm hex Left side oil filter cover retaining bolts: 8mm hex Right side drainplug: 7mm Allen Other tips? |

I believe the oil filter cover is T30 (torx.) |

You need replacement crush washers for the drain plugs. There are 2 different ones and they're like ~$4 each from the dealer. You may be able to find much cheaper ones at an auto parts store. There are a couple of threads about them in the archives. It's a messy mofo when you do it for the first time and even more so I would guess when you are doing it in a makeshift place with minimal tools/resources. Have you considered letting a dealer do it under the circumstances? |

Left side drainplug: 15mm hex Left side oil filter cover retaining bolts: 8mm hex Right side drainplug: 7mm Allen out off my head ( as it is 1.35 At night ) left side drain, 17 mm hex. ( use a socket or a ring spanner, because this plug can be tight and it is alu, with a open end spanner you will sertenly ruwn the plug ) bolts oil filter cover, T27 will fit inside the hex bolts. right side plug, 6 mm allen hint, while removing the left plug, get a large enuff container under it to catch the oil, the oil streaming out travels alot, other wise it will over shoot the container and make the floor dirty, iff your doing this on the sidestand, right side plug get the bike up straid and tip over a little to the right to drain it even more filling oil, leave a container under the bike while filling, as the level rises the last 3/4 of a liter will back up the filler hole quickly and possible spil over the filler hole have fun gr, Bud o yeah use new rings, copper right side , Alu left side |

Fresno: it's a question of time, mostly -- I've got four days to cover 2100 miles. I figure I'll take an hour to do the change at the end of the first day, and I'm not sure which dealer's open at 8 p.m. along my route... Oh, I know the plan might go south; but I'm gonna give it a shot. I've had more complicated plans work, and less complicated plans fail. My last "express service" at a dealer (for an warranty ECM flash on my Uly) was forecast at an hour... but the bike was there four days. So ya never know. I'll remember your comment about the mess -- I don't want to leave that for anyone. |

Gotcha. Good luck. +1 on being kind to the environment. T27 will work for the oil filter cover, but I am pretty sure its a T30 like most of the torx screws on the bike. |

Just got this nice mail from Dillon Brothers H-D in Omaha -- I'd asked them about the washers & and oil cartridge: --------- ... Up until last week's announcement, we were one of the largest volume Buell dealers in the country. We have everything you need. Our charge for the 1st service is $131.76 for parts and labor. We are open at 8am and could do the service while you wait. --------------- That sounds pretty darn good to me. I bet they have a coffee pot. I'll bring my tools just in case things change, though. Thanks to all for the info. |

I'm tired, and can't understand what i'm missing... Must be a complete noob mistake. it's not my first time (on MC's) but geesh... Drained the oil - 17mm socket for L side, 6mm allen for R side. golden - no problems. filling back up it overfills *just* over 2qts. OK, no biggie - checked level and yep it's over full. I popped the R side drain since it was easier - barely a dribble comes out of it! (plug/cap was off) So i pulled it down from the PB stand, straddled and leaned it to the R pretty far - a bit more dribble then nothing but drip drip. I am 99% sure from reading the manual that they share the oil - why isn't the oil getting into the R side? Engine is/was cold, but even sitting 30+ min later it's still not seeming to get into R side. Help!? WTF am i doing wrong? I'll check in the AM so hopefully can get it finished and Ride to work! Thanks!!! |
