The owner's manual says use Syn3 if available, dino if not. |

All HD/B bikes leave the factory with dino except Screaming Eagle/CVO bikes - they get Syn3. Z |

Whatever's in it, they say add Syn3 if you have to add. From the on-line owner's manual:

I searched and found several old threads on the issue. There were a lot of conflicting posts about what's actually in these engines from the factory. Normally I'd agree with Barker, but this is a WHOLE different engine from our air-cooled lumps. Some pretty note-worthy high performance engines like Corvettes come from the factory with synthetic fill. I only have ~160 miles to go to the first change. I'm gonna take the safe route, follow the owner's manual, and use Syn3. |

When service rep gave me tour of bike he told me it had Syn3 in it not Dino. Service rep...meaning at the dealership? Uh, there is an excellent chance he was pulling that tidbit of info out of his ass. It's real easy guys. Break the bike in with the oil from the factory (whatever it may be.) and change to a full synthetic (which Syn 3 is not) at 500-600 miles. |

Syn 3 isnt full synthetic? Someone better tell Harley Screamin' Eagle® SYN3® Full Synthetic Motorcycle Lubricant - SAE 20W50 TESTED-CERTIFIED for use in Harley-Davidson® engine, primary chaincase and transmission applications, the new Screamin' Eagle® Full SYN3® Synthetic Lubricant makes changing and topping-off fluids a simple, one-product process. Developed with a proprietary three synthetic basestock formula, Screamin' Eagle® SYN3® Lubricant is formulated to provide for long-term protection and engine cleanliness requirements and to provide superior high-temperature protection for high-output engines. SYN3® is formulated to maintain the coefficient of friction for proper clutch operation and to provide the proper lubrication to the primary chain drive. In addition, SYN3® is designed to provide the correct lubricity for the anti-wear requirements of transmission gears and for improved seal protection. This formula is approved by Harley-Davidson® for use in all stages of engine life and is not detrimental to the break-in stage of engines. |

IIRC, Syn3 is a Class III oil, which is not a true synthetic. It's based on petroleum and hyper-refined. I am not any expert and there are plenty of people that can elaborate. Amsoil is Class IV, true synthetic. |
